Rockdale will take on a different look this fall in the weeks leading up to the Oct. 17-19 Fair. Two concerts at Fair Park will feature some big-time talent.
The John Corbett Band will appear Sept. 14. Corbett turned to music after an acting career that saw him appear in lead roles in the television series Northern Exposure and the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding.
Two weeks later the Texas band Reckless Kelly will take the Fair Park stage on Sept. 28.
You can read the details in a front-page story in this week’s Reporter.
The concerts are part of the “new set of eyes” which have been charged with making Rockdale a destination to boost the hotel-motel industry, and give our community an economic shot in the arm.
Those “eyes” belong to Orasi Development, which was hired earlier this year using funds from the hotel-motel tax collected by the city.
Orasi has pitched right in, creating new events, like those listed above, and transforming well-established ones.
For instance, the annual citywide garage sale, held on the first Saturday of September, will now be a three-day weekend event and will expand to include an antique fair.
The antique fair will be downtown at Wolf Park and other locations Friday and Saturday, Sept. 6-7, and the expanded citywide garage sale is set for Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 7-8.
That gives Rockdale three major weekend events in September, leading up to the big fair the next month.
The excitement continues after the fair. The popular Art Outside event, featuring dazzling outdoor displays, returns to Apache Pass the same weekend as the fair.
Texas trail riders also return to Apache Pass in November and a bigger and better Cowboy Christmas weekend is planned in December.
Already on tap for next year are Milam County’s first-ever Hero Rush obstacle race at Apache Pass and the downtown Tejas Art & Book Festival, both in March, and the Milam County Nature Festival in April.
See you in Rockdale!— .
