‘Carrying the Cross’ event set here Sunday
“Carrying the Cross—Join in Unison for Christ” will be held Sunday, Aug. 11, beginning in downtown Rockdale at the former Rockdale Ford location (across Cameron Avenue from The Rockdale Reporter).
The event will assemble at that location at 2 p.m. and walk to Fair Park, according to John Krause, publicist. Water will be provided along the walk.

RSBC ‘Garden of Hope’ offering plots for fall
Rising Star Baptist Church’s community “Garden of Hope” project at 1055 Texas Street, Rockdale, announces that it is time to plan fall gardening.

St. Thomas ‘Invitation Sunday’ September 15
Sept. 15 will be “Invitation Sunday” at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 302 E. Davilla, in Rockdale.
“All are welcome to join us for the 11 a.m. service,” said Rev. Pam Graham, St. Thomas vicar.
Guest preacher for the service will be the Rev. Canon John Newman. “John is the Canon for lifelong Christian formation,” Rev. Graham said. “His vocation is to preach, teach, guide, shape, clarify, listen, articulate, and empower so that we can grow up into Christ together and joyfully live into our Baptismal Covenant.”
“Fr. John is a profound, dynamic, witty preacher—one definitely not to miss,” Rev. Graham added.
St. Monica Catholic homecoming festival
CAMERON— St. Monica Catholic Church, 306 South Nolan Avenue, Cameron, will hold its 130th anniversary and homecoming festival Sunday, Aug. 18 with the public invited.
Holy Mass will be at 10 a.m. featuring the Taylor Czech Chorus. Serving of barbecue beef and sausage plates ($8) will start at 10:30 a.m. A live auction will be at 3:30 p.m.
The Majeks of Corpus Christi will provide live entertainment. Other events will include bingo, a horseshoe tournament, raffle and concessions.
Dinner and movie set Friday at Friendship BC
Dinner and a movie, “Facing the Giants,” will be featured at Friendship Baptist Church at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, according to Delmar McCracken, pastor. The church is located 7 miles south of Milano on SH 36. FMI: 979-567-0242.
Next men’s breakfast Tuesday at St. John’s
An ecumenical monthly men’s Christian fellowship breakfast is held from 7 until 8 a.m. each second Tuesday, the site rotating between several local churches. Next breakfast will be on Tuesday, Aug. 13, at St. John’s United Methodist Church. “Purpose is Christian fellowship and all men of the Rockdale area are invited,” said Bill Avrett, spokesman.
‘Little blessings’ fund-raiser planned
THORNDALE— Prizes have been announced for a “Little Blessings” fund-raiser benefiting the St. Paul Lutheran School in Thorndale. Prizes will be awarded at the annual fund-raiser Saturday, Oct. 26 at Fireman’s Hall.
Tickets are $100 each and entitle the buyer and a guest to a catered chicken fried steak meal and a chance to win the following:
• Camouflage Kubota RTV 400 ($9,000 value).
• 5-by-10-foot utility trailer ($1,500 value).
• $500 Visa gift card.
Only 200 of the $100 tickets will be sold. Also available are $25 “meal and dance only” tickets. Holders of the $25 tickets will be able to bid on auction items.
The Oct. 26 fund-raiser schedule: 5 p.m., registration and social hour; 6 p.m. meal; 7 p.m. drawing, live auction and dance.
