About 30 persons attended Saturday’s day-long genealogy workshop at the city library with professional genealogist Lynna Kay Shuffield of Houston. Subjects covered included 20th Century military and war dead research, Texas War of Independence research and scrapbooking family history. DPS called to wrecks
State troopers were called to a pair of motor vehicle crashes during the past week in the Rockdale area.
Trooper Ernest DelBosque investigated a two-vehicle collision at 7:40 a.m. Sunday on US 77, one half-mile north of County Road 235, just north of the Minerva community.
Drivers were listed as Joe Rubio Jr., 33, of Rockdale, and 80-year-old Adriana Harton of Friendswood. Full Story
Two draw charges in ‘home invasion’
Two Cameron men have been arrested in connection with what police in that city are terming a “home invasion” in that city Friday afternoon.
Billy Joe Pittman Jr., 28, and Alvin Dejuan Melton, 30, were both charged with aggravated robbery and unlawful restraint. Full Story
This is how area volunteer fire departments spent much of the past week. Grass fires have been reported in South Milam County almost every day and there have been plenty of rekindles. This blaze was fought by Tanglewood and Rockdale volunteers around 5 p.m. on County Road 313. Firefighters said the blaze burned one and one-half acres and was started by a hay baler. Full Story
Pesky brush fire keeps departments on the run
Units from three area volunteer fire departments have been called out to what began as a controlled burn at least four times since Saturday.
Milano VFD fire chief Jesse Love said that a brush pile that was being burned at the Paul Myers residence on CR 322 was the cause of the blaze that had burned around 20 acres as of Tuesday afternoon. Full Story
Ten draw terms in week’s 20th District Court action
CAMERON—Ten persons were sentenced during the past week in 20th District Court action, according to Prosecutors Bill Torrey and John Paschall, who listed case dispositions as follows:
• Douglas Patrick King, 55, Cameron, pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance (1 to 4 grams), eight-year prison term probated six years, $2,000 fine, $140 restitution to DPS. Full Story
Police probe theft reports
Rockdale police investigated the death of a two-year-old girl last week that ended with a murder charge. See page 1A.
In much less serious matters, police also investigated two incidents of shoplifting, the thefts of a game console and sunglasses and a gas drive-off.
