Reporter/Bill Martin Still in uphill conditioning mode, the Tigers will see their first live action against someone else Friday at Marlin. Reporter/Bill Martin While the opening day of the regular season is Friday, Aug. 30, when the Tigers host Salado with a 7:30 kickoff, Rockdale has a couple of scrimmages set up before then and the first one is on tap Friday when the Tigers travel to Marlin for a 7:45 p.m. start.

Big Blue will mix it up again at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22 when they will host Robinson.

Marlin, which shares eightteam District 13-2A with Cameron, was 4-6 last season and is expected to place fourth in 2013 with 14 returning starters.

Rockdale head coach Jeff Miller is looking for a variety of things from different players and units.

“On offense, we need to execute our basic plays against whatever defensive front they present us,” he said. “Defensively, we just need to be in the right place, line up correctly.

“I’m looking for speed and execution and just play hard.”

After a sluggish first day in pads on Friday, the Tigers have picked up the pace in workouts.

“It has gone really well after the first day in pads,” Miller said. “We’ve had four really good practices since then. The retention level has been high especially with the new defensive philosophy.”

A couple of players suffered concussion-like symptoms and are being evaluated.

The annual “Meet the Tigers” social and cake auction will take place in Tiger Gymnasium on Monday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m
