Four place in state record book judging

Four Milam County senior 4-Hers won first at the district recordbook competition to advance to the state contest. Congratulations to the following 4-Hers for a lot of hard work: Danielle Pedroza, fifth place, Citizenship and Civic Education; Collin Kostroun, fifth place, Plant and Soil Science; Devin Fisher, seventh place in Natural Resources; A.J. Harwell, ninth place in Rabbit.

Danielle and Devin are members of the Thorndale 4-H Club. Collin and A.J. are members of the Cameron 4-H Club.

ENROLLMENT TIME— The new 4-H year will start in August with 4-H Connect opening for new and renewed enrollments of youth and adult leaders. Aug. 15 will be the first day to enroll for the 2013-2014 4-H year.

The cost will be $20 for third graders through 18 years of age. Clover Kids (kindergarten through second grade) and leaders are free.

On the county website you will find helpful guidelines to help you re-enroll and update your family profile as well as help new 4-H families enroll. You can also contact the Milam County Extension Office for assistance. The 4-H Connect for on-line 4-H enrollment is located on the following website, http://texas4-h.tamu.edu/.

CALENDAR DRAWINGS DUE SEPT. 16—4-Hers need to show off their talents and submit drawings for the 2013- 2014 Milam County 4-H Calendar. You can submit drawings illustrating your 4-H projects and the slogan “Milam County 4-H” Leaders 4 Tomorrow.” You can submit multiple drawings for the contest.

Drawings can be submitted to the Milam County Extension Office from now until Sept. 16. Submit your drawings on plain white paper (8 1/2 x 11). Pencil or colored pictures will be accepted, but remember that most pictures are printed in black and white for the calendar, so make sure your picture will copy. Put your name, age and club on back of drawing.

The calendar/handbook will be published and distributed on Oct. 6 at our Celebration. The first, second and third place drawings will receive money prizes at the Celebration.

LIVESTOCK SHOW DEADLINES—Members wishing to validate lambs, goats and breeding sheep for Spring Major Livestock Shows (Fort Worth, San Antonio, San Angelo, Houston, Austin) need to order tags at the Milam County Extension Office by 5 p.m. Aug. 23. Validation will be held from 4-6 p.m. Oct. 29. You may order as many tags as you anticipate having projects to validate. Cost will be $12 per lamb and goat tag and $6 per breeding sheep validation. Milam County Junior Livestock Show will accept animals tagged for major shows.

ROCKDALE FAIR—Broiler pick up for the Rockdale Fair is Aug. 28 at the Home Demonstration Building in Rockdale Fair Park. Rabbit validation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Home Demonstration Building in Rockdale Fair Park.

Remember you will enter your animals at validation, so bring the required information with you. Complete rules are posted on our website. This year’s Rockdale Fair will be held Oct. 17-19.

MCJLS—Steer validation for the 2014 Milam County Junior Livestock Show will be 6-7 p.m. Sept. 3 at the Youth Exposition Building in Cameron.

MCJLS dates are March 27-29 (tenative dates).

COUNTY RECOGNITION— Milam County 4-Hers have two more chances to be recognized at the Celebration Event in October. You can submit a recordbook for county recognition and/or submit a county recognition form by Sept. 13. Forms for the recordbook and recognition forms are available on the county website, http:// milam.agrilife.org/ or at the Milam County Extension Office, 100 E. 1st Street in Cameron.
