United Steelworkers of America Local 4895 held its annual picnic Saturday morning and afternoon at The Ranch. Current USW members, laid-off members and retired members participated, according to David Edmonds USW official. Buckholts police chief moving to Thorndale
THORNDALE—For the second time in three months, former Milam County State Trooper Martin Jackson has been named police chief of a Milam municipality.
City council members in Thorndale last Wednesday hired Jackson to replace Fred Keefer who was fired on a 4-1 vote July 23.
Jackson is currently chief of police in Buckholts. He was hired March 15 to that position. Full Story

CrimeStoppers tip leads police to drug arrest on Saturday
A tip called in to Milam County CrimeStoppers resulted in a drug arrest after a foot chase on Saturday.
Lt. J. D. Newlin said 35-yearold Gabriel Ray Vargas of Cameron was charged with evading arrest or detention with previous conviction, evading arrest or detention-enhanced, possession of a controlled substance ( less than one gram), and three counts of non-payment of child support. Full Story
Aerial hog hunting arrest stemmed from complaints
The arrest of a Temple-based helicopter pilot earlier this month was linked to complaints from Milam landowners over feral hog hunting from the air. Full Story
Volunteers prepare to start the monthly free surplus food giveaway from the Capital Area Mobile Food Bank Thursday morning in the KC Hall parking lot. The truck visits Rockdale each third Thursday at 9 a.m. There are no restrictions on who receives food. Organizer Denise Sifuentes said the monthly distributions rely totally on volunteer helpers and expressed appreciation for support. Full Story

Sometimes this is the way you fight blazes and Rockdale VFD Fire Chief Ward Roddam climbed onto the roof of a home owned by Bradley Allen as volunteers battled the blaze for several hours. The house, located at the end of County Road 308A was gutted. Trucks from the Milano and Thorndale VFDs were summoned to provide assistance “We appreciate the support,” Roddam said. Full Story
Temple doctor indicted from Milam fataility
Among those named in indictments Thursday was a 64-yearold Temple physician who was indicted for manslaughter in connection with a Feb. 8 highway collision that took the life of a College Station nurse.
Dr. Allan Eugene Nickel was listed as the driver of one of the vehicles on FM 485 northeast of Cameron.
Kristen Salerno, 28, died at the scene. Full Story
LRHC in talks on Cameron hospital
Officials of Rockdale-based Little River Health Care are in negotiations to operate the troubled Central Texas Hospital in Cameron permanently.
A twice-delayed 20th District Court hearing on the status of the 34-bed facility has been twice delayed and is now scheduled for Aug. 30. Full Story
