CrimeStoppers tip leads police to drug arrest on Saturday

A tip called in to Milam County CrimeStoppers resulted in a drug arrest after a foot chase on Saturday.

Lt. J. D. Newlin said 35-yearold Gabriel Ray Vargas of Cameron was charged with evading arrest or detention with previous conviction, evading arrest or detention-enhanced, possession of a controlled substance ( less than one gram), and three counts of non-payment of child support.

Bond on the evading arrest and drug charges was set at $18,000. There was no bond on the child support charges. Vargas remains in the Milam County Jail.

Newlin said Sgt. Stephen Goodrich located a vehicle reported in the tip and stopped it.

“The driver fled, Sgt. Goodrich pursued on foot and made the arrest,” Newlin said. “A small amount of cocaine was found.”

WARRANTS—Police served five local warrants during the week, one each for expired driver’s license, failure to appear, failure to maintain financial responsibility, expired MVI sticker and expired registration.

ACCIDENT—One motor vehicle accident was reported during the week.

Police said vehicles operated by Cierra Pomykal and Donivan Ramey, both of Rockdale, was in collision at 10:14 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Green and West Cameron (US 79).

Police, termed the accident “minor.”

OFFENSES—Police are investigating a break-in which resulted in the loss of money, video games and other items.

Also under investigation are cases in which jewelry was reported missing and traffic cones were stolen from the Hunter’s Chase senior living apartments construction site.

CITATIONS—Police issued 43 speeding tickets during the past week, six each for operating a vehicle with expired license plates and no valid MVI sticker, five for driving while license invalid, two each for running a stop sign, failure to maintain financial responsibility, no driver’s license, and violation of open container law and one each for improper lane change and expired driver’s license.

One citation was issued for animal at large.

SERVICE CALLS—Officers responded to 146 total calls for service during the past week and 89 calls were received through the 911 system.
