Thorndale Jamboree coming up Monday
THORNDALE—VFW POST 4009 and its Ladies Auxiliary will be sponsoring the monthly Thorndale Country & Gospel Music Jamboree on Monday, Aug. 26, Marjorie Menzel, Auxiliary president, announced.
“Our Jamboree House Band and special guests will be playing and singing beginning at 7 p.m.,” she said. “The Jamboree is held the fourth Monday of every month except December.”
Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. with food available from the kitchen which offers sausage wraps, chicken salad sandwiches, homemade desserts and drinks.
“Come enjoy the good food and great music,” Menzel said.
Genealogy society will meet here on Tuesday
Milam County Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, in the conference room of Citizens National Bank, Rockdale (rear entrance).
Patricia McKee will present a program on her Vogel family. Members whose surnames begin with Q through Z will be responsible for refreshments. Paper goods, drinks and ice will be provided by Linda Whorton. Visitors are welcome.
The society’s recent genealogy workshop/seminar with Lynna Kay Shuffield drew a “ full house” with 30 persons attending. Ms. Shuffield demonstrated many useful hints and web sites on finding ancestors’ military records, verifying DAR and DRT lineage, and more.
Because of computer problems, she was delayed in presenting the final portion of her program on scrapbooking family history.
When one of society’s long-time members became ill, the rest of the workshop was canceled. The society will finalize a date for Ms. Shuffield to return and present a program on scrapbooking and using Find A Grave, possibly a half-day session.— Linda Whorton, publicity
Chicken fried steak meal to aid roof fund
THORNDALE—Thorndale VFW Post 4009 and its Ladies Auxiliary will sponsor a chicken fried steak lunch on Sunday, Sept. 8, at the VFW Post Home on FM 486 North in Thorndale.
“All proceeds will go to a new roof for the VFW Hall and repairs to the building,” said Marjorie Menzel, publicist. “Many families and community members rent and use the hall for parties, reunions and meetings,” she noted.
The meal will include chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, green beans, white gravy, and “ the trimmings,” Menzel said. Serving will begin at 11 a.m. and continue until 1 p.m. Desserts will be available for a free will offering.
“Please come enjoy the food and assist in our goal of repairs for the building,” Menzel said.
Sunshine quilters to meet here Thursday
Sunshine ‘n Shadows Guilt Guild will meet at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 22 at Meadowbrook Baptist Church fellowship hall. Members will be working on individual projects. Visitors are welcome. FMI: Eddie Davidson, 512- 446-6316.
Kristi’s Krusaders plan 4th MS Rally Sept. 14
MILANO— Kristi’s Krusaders will hold their fourth annual MS Rally on Saturday, Sept. 14 at Nat’s in Milano, according to Kristi Bode, publicist.
Registration will open at 9 a.m. with first bike out at 11 a.m. and last bike in at 4 p.m. Ride fee is $20 ($25 with passenger) and includes a barbecue meal when ride is over.
Stops will include Burnouts in Somerville, Cyndi’s Hawg Hang Out in Hogg, The Ranch in Rockdale and Nat’s in Milano. Barbecue plates will be sold to the public for $8 each starting at noon. A live auction will begin at 5 p.m.
Shirts for the event will also be sold that day. Other activities will include a silent auction, door prizes and a bike show. After the live auction, the Full House Blues Band will play.

Rockdale Noon Lions set scholarship golf event
Rockdale Noon Lions Club held their monthly board meeting Aug. 14 at Gatti’s Pizza. The Lions hosted District 2S-3 Governor Frank Kinald at the Aug. 7 meeting.
The annual Lions Scholarship Golf Tournament has been scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 12 at Rockdale Country Club. Lion Ron Montgomery is chairman and will present assignments at the Aug. 21 meeting.
The newly formed Leo Club at Rockdale Junior High School will be elect officers in the next few weeks.

Mt. Homer Cemetery collecting dues for upkeep
MILANO—Mt. Homer Baptist Church Cemetery Association dues are now being collected for 2013, according to Connie Seelke, president. “Dues pay for cemetery upkeep, we are proud of the cemetery’s condition and we ask that all members pay their dues so this work can continue,” she said.

Milano VFD Auxiliary to hold fall garage sale
MILANO— Milano Volunteer Fire Department’s Ladies Auxiliary will hold its annual fall garage sale Oct. 3-5 at the Milano Civic Center/Fire Station, spokesperson Jane Yoakum said.
Hours will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 3-4 and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 5.
The building will be open starting Monday, Sept. 30 at 8 a.m. to accept donations for the sale.
