Antique Fair to include free appraisals by pros

Reeves, Velazquez to appear Saturday; event added to city-wide garage sale

The Rockdale Antiques Fair and Citywide Garage Sale w ill prov ide f ree appraisa ls of antiques and collectibles to visitors by two of Texas’ leading appraisers. The Fair has scheduled Stephanie A. Reeves, ISA , of Houston a nd Ma r ia Josefa Velazquez of Kingwood, to provide the appraisals. Both women are certified as senior appraisers by the International Society of Appraisers (ISA); are former presidents of ISA’s Gulf Coast Chapter, which includes Texas; and are certified as senior appraisal professionals by the Appraisers Association of America.

Reeves and Velazquez will be at the Antiques Fair from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7. They will provide free appraisals on art, antiques and collectibles to visitors at the Fair. Visitors are restricted to no more than two items for appraisals.

The Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Wolf Park in downtown Rockdale on Sept. 7-8. Garage sales will be held throughout the community on Saturday, Sept. 8, and Sunday, Sept. 9.

Maps of t he Fair site and garage sales locations throughout the city will be available at Wolf Park during the antiques show and at merchants throughout the city during the three-day event and also in next week’s Reporter.

Reeves is considered to be one of Texas’ premiere appraisers. She has more than 15 years experience in the antique business as a professional appraiser and more spent than 30 years as a collector and vendor of fine art, antiques and collectibles. She is triple certified in appraising diamonds, jewelry and colored stones by the Gemological Institute of America. She also is the former owner of several prominent antique and collectibles businesses in Houston.

Velazquez is the president of Velazquez Fine Art Consultants in Kingwood, which is considered to be one of the state’s premier consulting firms. She has more than 30 total years in the fine arts field and as a professional appraiser of art, antiques and collectibles. Velazquez has studied professional appraisal techniques w ith universities and professional groups in New York, Chicago, California and Mexico City. She also has served as an art consultant for U.S. federal government agencies and has been published in several professional appraisal books.

The City of Rockdale is expanding its annual citywide garage sale by adding the twoday Rockdale Antique Fair to the annual event. The overall event is expected to include more than 150 sellers and antique dealers i n dow ntow n Rockd a le a nd throughout the city.

City officials see the Antique Fair as a great way to introduce Rockdale’s unique attributes to out-of-town visitors. The city wants to showcase the historic downtown area—which is filled with eclectic shops; long-time, down-home retailers; and tasty restaurants and the eye-catching Texas architecture of classic buildings and homes that are located throughout the community.
