Reporter/Marie Bakken MILANO—Craig Jentsch and his Milano Eagles will open up their 2013 campaign on Thursday as they travel to face the Del Valle Cardinals’ junior varsity squad. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

This game is more of filler, as the team that Milano has played in its opener for the past eight season ended it’s football program.

“The kids are excited to get the season started,” Jentsch, beginning his fifth year, said. “We still have a long way to go but know we should get better each week.”

Milano has a senior-laden squad with 11 listed on the varsity roster.

FILLER—Since 2005, Milano has opened its season against Waco-Texas Christian Academy (TCA). Late in the spring, Jentsch found out by chance that the private school had done away with its football program.

That left the coach scrambling to find an opening week game. The Eagles had played Del Valle’s

JV squad in 2011, and after a call to their coaching staff, it was agreed that Milano would play one of their junior varsity teams.

Milano had beaten Waco TCA in all of their match-ups during that eight year stretch.

In the 2012 game, the Eagles blew out TCA 45-0.

EMPTY SLOTS— Ha d Jentsch not found an opponent for this week it would have left three blanks on the Eagles’ schedule. Milano still has no opponent for Sept. 20, but coaches are still trying to find one.

The Eagles have a scheduled open date on Oct. 4, the week before they begin District 13AII play.

JUNIOR VARSITY—With over 40 players out for high school football, Milano is able to field a junior v arsity team. T he JV will open up its season next week at Anderson-Shiro.
