Cites commute, family as reasons for leaving

Melody Dawson, a second-generation member of the Rockdale City Council, resigned her east ward council position on Thursday, citing job and family concerns.

Dawson was elected in May, 2011, following her mother, Dr. Fanny Lovelady- Spain, to the council.

Dr. Spain served a term from 2002 to 2005.

“As a single mother, small business owner, corporate professional and public servant, balancing time between my family obligations, a two-hour commute with 10 to 12-hour work days and volunteer service for my community is challenging,” she said.

“After careful consideration and discussion with my family, I will resign from the Rockdale City Council effective immediately.”

Dawson expressed appreciation to the mayor, council, city staffers and added, “I am specially honored to have had the opportunity to serve the east ward citizens.”

ELECTION—The c ounci l plans to call for a Dec. 21 election to fill Dawson’s post at its special session set for 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Filing would begin on Wednesday (Sept. 11) and run through Oct. 21.

Write- in candidates would have to declare by Oct. 25 for eligibility.

Early voting would be weekdays Dec. 9-17 and election day hours Dec. 21 would be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
