No filings for council

At presstime Wednesday there were no filings for the Dec. 21 city council election to fill the unexpired east-ward term created by last week’s resignation of Melody Dawson.

Council members formally called for that election on Thursday and the filing period began.

Deadline to file at City Hall is 5 p.m. Oct. 21.

Write-in candidates would have to declare their candidacy by Oct. 25 to become eligible for write-in votes to be counted.

Early voting is set for Dec. 9-17 .

Dawson, who had served on the council since 2011, submitted her resignation Sept. 5, citing family concerns and a long commute to her job as primary reasons.

Her term runs until mid-2014.

Dawson followed her mother, Dr. Fanny Lovelady-Spain to the council. Dr. Spain served an eastward council term from 2002 to 2005.
