4-H Clubs collecting soldier care packages
Rockdale 4-H Club is collecting items for care packages for soldiers. Rockdale 4-Hers are working with other 4-Hers from across the county, according to publicist Yvette McCoy.
The group will be in front of Walmart in Rockdale from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 12 collecting items, including snacks, toiletries, books and more. A full list can be found at http://milam. agrilife.org/files/2011/07/Military-Community Service-May-2013.pdf.
“We will also be collecting new and gently used stuffed animals for Operation Huggables, which are donated to children of military parents when they are deployed,” McCoy said.

Milano Jamboree ahead Saturday
MILANO—The monthly Milano Junction Country Jamboree will be held at 7 p.m. in the Milano Civic Center with all musicians and listeners welcome, announced Tina Galbreath, publicist.

Music club tackles square dancing here
Matinee Musical Club held the first meeting of this club year in the home of Denise Starnes with Karen Cast as co-hostess.
The refreshment table followed a country western theme as a lead-in to the evening’s “fun and lively” program. Douglas and Janice Caffey and Al and Connie Frazier led members through some square dance moves and taught the fundamental terms used in this dance form. Members enjoyed several dances with Al explaining the moves and doing the calling.
President Lisa Loewe took roll call and led the Collect and the business meeting that followed. The meeting closed with the singing of the NFMC benediction song, accompanied by pianist Dixie Whitmore.

Milano VFD Auxiliary fall garage sale Oct. 3-5
MILANO— Milano Volunteer Fire Department’s Ladies Auxiliary will hold its annual fall garage sale Oct. 3-5 at the new Milano VFD/Shelter building, 305 E. Avenue C (US79/ TX36), spokesperson Jane Yoakum said. Hours will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 3-4 and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 5.
The building will be open starting Monday, Sept. 30 at 8 a.m. to accept donations for the sale.

La Escuelita’s annual cookoff set for Oct. 12
La Escuelita will hold its annual fall cookoff on Saturday, Oct. 12.
There will be menudo, chili, and barbecue beef, chicken and pork cookoff categories, plus horseshoe and washer pitching tournaments. Breakfast tacos will be available in the morning, plus vendor booths.

Thorndale Masons set fish fry on October 6
THORNDALE—Thorndale Masonic Lodge No. 978 will hold a fish fry scholarship fund-raiser on Sunday, Oct. 6 at Fireman’s Hall. Serving will begin at 11 a.m. and continue until sold out.
Cost is $9 a plate, dessert included. “You can eat at the hall or get your plates to go. The lodge encourages everyone to come out to support the local Masons and get yourself a delicious plate of fried catfish,” said Barton Felton, spokesman.
Rockdale Noon Lions set scholarship golf Oct. 12
Rockdale Noon Lions Club’s annual Lions Scholarship Golf Tournament has been scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 12 at Rockdale Country Club, with Ron Montgomery tourney chairman.
Proceeds from the tournament will go to the club’s scholarship fund that benefits RHS seniors each spring.

DIME BOX—The annual Dime Box Black Bridge Festival Oct. 4-5, a Lions Club- sponsored event, will feature a barbecue cookoff, parade, craft and swap booths, and the 36th annual Mini Marathon (10K and 2 mile runs and a 2-mile walk).
Other events will be a chili/soup/ hot dog supper, Dime Box ISD Choir, street dance, and a 42 tournament.
The Mini Marathon will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, followed by food, music, the parade and games.

Deanville FVD’s 36th fund-raiser October 13
DEANVILLE—The Deanville Volunteer Fire Department will hold its 36th annual fund-raiser Sunday, Oct. 13 at the fire station, corner of FM 1112 and Hwy 60.
Barbecue pork, beef, chicken, sausage and red-ring sausage will be ready at 7 a.m. Plate lunches of fried chicken and all the trimmings will be served starting at 11 a.m.
