Historical society’s projects, achievements

Editor’s note: the following letter was sent to all Rockdale Historical Association members. The Reporter, a member, is sharing it with readers so the achievements of the society can be noted. And, the organization welcomes new members interested in preserving the town’s history. Dear members,

The hot days of Summer are gone! Fall is Welcome!

Since the computer at the I&GN Depot Museum has pooped out there has been no communication with any of you for sometime. Blake Phillips, the weekend docent of the Depot, is applying for a grant for the amount a computer will cost. In the meantime, there are a few upcoming things and some current things that all of you should know.

Gary Jackson has restored/ rebuilt the old farm wagon that was used for decades by Mr. Lee Caywood. If you pass by the Blacksmith shop it is displayed under a shed designed and built by Gary and a couple of other men. Is looks amazing. Worth a trip down Milam Street.

The dining car is really taking shape. It has been painted on the interior and will soon have new flooring and tables. Hopefully by Christmas, everyone can see what good work has been done.

A quilt display is planned for our next exhibit in the museum. There have been three quilts loaned so far with a couple more promised. If you have a really old quilt or one with a story, please think of loaning it for this exhibit. We would like to have the exhibit in place in the next few weeks to last until the end of January. Call Mary Phillips 512-446-7118 or Pat Jackson 512-446-2956 for any info or pick up of your quilt.

The society’s annual Chili Meal Fund-raiser is coming up on Nov. 16. Details will be forthcoming. If you have anything for the silent auction that you would donate or if you would make a desert for the lunch, we will really appreciate it. Your auction items can be dropped off at the Depot on weekends or call one of the above numbers for pick up.

Earlier that same Saturday morning, in case you are a runner, before the chili meal you can join in to run/walk at 9 a.m. in a Diaper Dash 5K Run for Life fund raiser sponsored by Snap Fitness with donations going to Place of Hope Pregnancy Resource Center. One of the above numbers can give you information on this event.

Santa will be at the Depot on Saturday Dec. 7. At that time, we hope the dining car can be toured by all.

Sincerely,

Mary Phillips, board member
