Extrication

Reporter/Mike Brown Reporter/Mike Brown Rockdale volunteer firefighters used their jaws of life (leaning on vehicle at right) to remove the driver of this pickup from the wreckage after he collided with an 18-wheeler tanker rig at 2:47 p.m. Tuesday on US 77, between FM 487 and FM 908. Cecil Newton, 21, of Rockdale was flown to St. Joseph’s Hospital, Bryan, for treatment of numerous injuries including a broken arm, according to DPS Cpl. Erik Gaston (R) who investigated. A passenger in the 1989 Toyota pickup, 55-yearold Jesse Jones of Caldwell, was also flown to St. Joseph’s. Gaston said both men were wearing seat belts. Driver of the empty tanker rig was Michael Pickett, 36, of Caldwell. Gaston said both vehicles were northbound and the 18-wheeler was turning right into a driveway when it was struck by the pickup. The highway was closed for several periods.
