County reimbursed for jailing ‘criminal aliens’

The U. S. Department of Justice has announced the award of $8,180 to Milam County as a “partial reimbursement” of incarcerating undocumented criminal aliens “who have committed serious crimes in the United States.”

According to Kimberly King, of Justice Benefits Inc, a public sector consulting firm specializing in locating and accessing such federal reimbursements, Milam was one of 894—out of 3,140 eligible entities across the country—to successfully apply for the reimbursement.

Vehicles strike animals on South Milam roads

State troopers investigated a pair of accidents in which vehicles struck animals on area roadways last week.

No injuries were reported in either collision.

Trooper Ernest DelBosque said a vehicle operated by Lori Baggerly, 42, of Rockdale, collided with a hog on County Road 448 west of Rockdale.

Trooper Stephen Jeter said a vehicle driven by Minerva Cardona, 33, of Cameron, hit a deer on FM 486 near County Road 210.

Moderate damages were reported in both collisions.

Rockdale VFD giveaway scheduled for April 5th

The next annual giveaway night for the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department has been scheduled for April 5, 2014, according to Mike Korenek, RVFD spokesman.

“We chose this date to avoid conf licts with several other activities, most notably Easter,” Korenek said.

Milano council hears POSGCD presentation

MILANO—Milano city council members heard an overview of the Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District from manager Gary Westbrook during its regular meeting on Monday night at the town’s civic center.

Other agenda items also included voting to submit Kerry Starnes for consideration to represent the municipal interests on the POSGCD board.

Milano ISD trustees set to meet on Thursday

MILANO—Milano ISD board members are set to meet in reg- ular session at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Milano High School library.

Agenda items include several presentations, along with considering disposal of some buses and also the purchase of bleachers.

Area veterans invited to Milano ISD program

MILANO—All area veterans are invited to a Veterans Day program at Milano ISD, according to superintendent Robert Westbrook.

The program will start at 9 a. m. Monday, Nov. 11, in the Geneva Paceley Gym at Milano High School.

“A reception will be held for the veterans in the school cafeteria following the program,” Westbrook said.

Community outreach dinner set for Nov. 23rd

Rockdale’s annual Community Thanksgiving Outreach luncheon is set for 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 23 at the Family Life Center of First Baptist Church.

The free Thanksgiving meal, with all the trimmings, will be provided to eat in, take out or will be delivered to ill, shut-ins and families without transportation.

MDD sets two sessions Thursday at offices

Rockdale’s Municipal Development District (MDD) will hold two sessions Thursday at the district office, 114 East Cameron.

A special meeting at 1:30 p.m. will be followed by the regular monthly session at 5:30.

In the special session the district will discuss the chapter of the Texas Local Government Code dealing with municipal development districts.

In the regular session, directors will discuss various ongoing projects and continue to discuss a property purchase in executive session.

Brown Santa kickoff scheduled by sheriff

Milam County Sheriff’s Department will host its fourth annual Brown Santa Program starting Nov. 1.

After that date, applications for Milam County residents wanting to be served by the Brown Santa program will be taken.

Applicants must bring a Medicaid or WIC card with the child’s name on it, plus a valid Texas ID. Applications can be picked up at the sheriff’s office.

Anyone interested in donating new, unwrapped, toys can also bring them to the sheriff’s office, the only locations for such donations. Ask for Wynema Adams or Capt. Douglas, 254-697-7033.

Water line flushing set Oct. 23rd in Rockdale

City of Rockdale crews will f lush water lines in all areas of Rockdale after midnight on Wednesday, Oct. 23, according to City Manager Kelvin Knauf.

Knauf asked city water customers to run their cold water taps upon arising the next morning until the stream runs clear.

Appraisal review board sets Thursday session

CAMERON—The appraisal review board (ARB) of the Milam Appraisal District will meet in regular session at 9 a.m. Thursday in the AD office.

Agenda items include hearing scheduled protests, according to Chief Appraiser Pat Moraw.

State agency to assist with Medicare reviews

The Area Agency on Aging of Central Texas, the designated State Health Insurance Assistance Program for Milam County, will be at the Texas Workforce Conference Room in the One- Stop Center on Friday Nov. 15.

Purpose is to meet with, and assist, Medicare beneficiaries, concerning their health and prescription drug plan options for 2014.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 12-noon and 1 to 3 p.m.

Persons attending the sessions are asked to bring with them their Medicare card, a list of medications and dosages, the name of their preferred pharmacy and documents showing their household income.

The One-Stop Center is located at the corner of Bell and Main in downtown Rockdale.
