$235,851 in market show, $146,500 for heifers
The 38th Rockdale Fair, which concluded Saturday, reached heights never scaled by any of the previous 37.
Area businesses and organizations, bidding in a pair of auctions to benefit area FFA and 4-H youth, dug deep and contributed $382,351, much of which will end up paying for college educations. Full Story

Anyone hanging out at Rockdale’s Coffield Regional Airport Thursday afternoon (R) got an unexpected treat as a trio of skydivers decided to “hang in” to the airport. Parachute instructor David Moore of the Central Texas Skydiving Center near Lexington, parachuted in directly overhead on a tandem chute with Austin residents Neel and Sonali Gupta, his clients for the day. Foster dad ‘takes the fifth’ on testimony
Grand jury indicts 26 on Thursday
A Milam County grand jury indicted 26 persons on Thursday in its October session but didn’t hear from Clemon Small, the foster father of a two-year old Rockdale girl who died July 31.
Prosecutor Bill Torrey told The Reporter that Small, through his attorney, has invoked his Fifth Amendment right not to testify before the grand jury. Full Story
THC marker dedications Saturday for two locations
Two historic Rockdale area locations will get Texas Historical Commission markers designating them as places of special importance Saturday.
A 10 a.m. ceremony is set for Sugarloaf Mountain (CR 264) , followed by a 2 p.m. gathering at Apache Pass (FM 908) Full Story
Targets, critter cannons go ‘boom’
‘Explosions’ reported to sheriff’s office by residents south of Rockdale
Residents south of Rockdale, and sometimes in town, have been hearing things go “boom” in the night.
And sometimes in the day.
The Milam County Sheriff’s Department says it has investigated a number of reports this summer and fall and thinks most of the “suspicious noises” fall under two categories. Full Story
Final filing day yields contested council race
There will be a contested eastward city council race for half of Rockdale to decide on Dec. 21.
Leroy Phillips filed Monday for the seat recently vacated by Melody Dawson.
Monday was the final day to file in the special election.
Phillips will oppose Denise Holmes Wallace who filed on Sept. 27. Full Story
