Final filing day yields contested council race

Leroy Phillips filed Monday for the seat recently vacated by Melody Dawson.

Monday was the final day to file in the special election.

Phillips will oppose Denise Holmes Wallace who filed on Sept. 27.

Phillips is a retired Alcoan and Wallace is administrative assistant to the Milam County Judge.

EARLY VOTING—Write-in candidates will have to declare their candidacy by Friday to become eligible for write-in votes to be counted.

City Manager Kelvin Knauf said Nov. 21 is the final day a Rockdale resident who has not previously registered to vote may register and still be able to vote in the Dec. 21 election.

Early voting is set for Dec. 9-17 .

Those desiring mail-in ballots must apply by Dec. 14.

Dawson, who had served on the council since 2011, submitted her resignation Sept. 5, citing family concerns and a long commute to her job as primary reasons.

Her term runs until mid-2014.

Dawson followed her mother, Dr. Fanny Lovelady-Spain to the council.

Dr. Spain served for the east ward from 2002 to 2005.

The burn ban for Milam County has been lifted. Burning is always prohibited in the county's municipalities.
