Local troupe goes ‘Nuncrackers’
Earlier this season, the troupe reprised it’s very first show, “Charley’s Aunt,” and it’s first big stage, big cast musical, “South Pacific.” “Nuncrackers,” the Christmas musical about a group of stagestruck nuns from New Jersey, completes the trifecta.
“I think ‘Nunsense’ was the third show that we ever did,” said the current production’s director, Richard Stone, noting that the show isn’t a reprise, but does harken back to this theater group’s early years. “A couple of years later, we produced ‘Nunsense II.’ This is one of the next shows in the series so I guess it’s about time we got around to staging it.”
In this edition, the sisters of Mt. St. Helen’s School in Hoboken are taping their very first Christmas special for one of the public access channels. In an earlier show, one of the nuns won the Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes. Some of that money was used to convert the convent’s basement into a television studio from which the nuns regularly broadcast the Catholic Home Shopping Service to help raise money for the convent school. When one of the nuns is injured in a freak backstage accident, Rev. Mother Regina’s carefully laid plans begin to go awry.
Rev. Mother Mary Regina is played by Martha Lee. Sr. Mary Hubert, Mistress of Novices, is played by Mona Butala. Sisters Mary Robert Anne and Mary Paul, also known as Sr. Amnesia, are played by Tia Rae Stone and Mandi Tyson. Father Virgil Manly Trott is played by Buddy Shuffield.
Also in the show are Rebekkah Ferguson, Olivia Husher, Seth Tyson and Matt Tyson. Susan Montgomery accompanies the actors on piano and keyboard.
The show opens Saturday Nov. 2 with a membership reception beginning at 7 p.m. The 2014 season will be announced during the reception.
Additional performances of “ Nuncrackers” will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10.
All shows will be at the Williams Events Center.
Tickets are $15, $12 for students, and will be available at the door.
