Family Matters to honor veterans on Nov. 10th

The Family Matters organization is sponsoring a Veterans Program at 11 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, at St. John’s United Methodist Church, according to Raymon Puente.

“We will honor all veterans and their service,” he said.

Puente said all veterans and their families are invited to “come and join us in the special program.”

St. John’s United Methodist Church is located at the corner of Summit and Hillcrest.

‘Neighbors’ challenge Three Oaks renewal

Neighbors for Neighbors (NFN) has filed for a contested case hearing before the Texas Railroad Commission on a request by Luminant Mining to renew its Three Oaks mining operation.

Three Oaks, located in Lee and Bastrop Counties, provides lignite coal for Luminant’s Sandow Power Plant units near Rockdale.

NFN is asking the commission to require that Luminant Mining post an outside bond to cover th estimated $60 million cost of “cleaning up the strip mine.”

The group maintains that EFH, Luminant’s parent company is expected to file for bankruptcy by year’s end and that “there may not be funds to cover the cost of the cleanup.”

Milano council hears POSGCD presentation

MILANO—Milano city council members heard an overview of the Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District from manager Gary Westbrook during its regular meeting on Monday night at the town’s civic center.

Other agenda items also included voting to submit Kerry Starnes for consideration to represent the municipal interests on the POSGCD board.

Milano ISD trustees set to meet Thursday

MILANO—Milano ISD board members are set to meet in regular session at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Milano High School library.

Agenda items include several presentation, along with consideration of disposal of some buses and also the purchase of bleachers.

CAPARO sets meeting for November 11th

The Community Advisory Panel to Alcoa’s Rockdale Operations (CAPARO) will meet on Monday, November 11, for an update from Alcoa on business, environment, and safety matters and the annual report on emissions.

The 6 to 8:30 p.m. meeting will be held at the Alcoa Lake Training Center near Rockdale.

RDA sets membership meeting November 4th

Rockdale Downtown Association will hold its annual membership meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, at Sho’Nuff Restaurant.

“Come and join us for fellowship, food and drink, hear our accomplishments and share your interest in the future of downtown Rockdale,” Chris Dyess, RDA president, said.

Milam museum sells cookbook for holidays

CAMERON—The Milam County Museum has its new Heritage Collection cookbook on sale at the museum, 112 West First, in downtown Cameron.

The project of the friends of the Milam County Museum is $25 and is filled with recipes from current and former Milam County residents.

Chapter headings also have historic photos from the museum archives, and other historical information. Those who purchase a copy can also receive the e-book version at no extra charge.

The cookbook, along with the new 2013 Milam County jail museum Christmas ornament, make great holiday gifts. The ornament costs $20. It is gift boxed and can be engraved.

Area veterans invited to Milano ISD program

MILANO—All area veterans are invited to a Veterans Day program at Milano ISD, according to superintendent Robert Westbrook.

The program will start at 9 a. m. Monday, Nov. 11, in the Geneva Paceley Gym at Milano High School.

“A reception will be held for the veterans in the school cafeteria following the program,” Westbrook said.

Community outreach dinner set for Nov. 23rd

Rockdale’s annual Community Thanksgiving Outreach luncheon is set for 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 23 at the Family Life Center of First Baptist Church.

The free Thanksgiving meal, with all the trimmings, will be provided to eat in, take out or will be delivered to ill, shut-ins and families without transportation.

Brown Santa kickoff scheduled by sheriff

Milam County Sheriff’s Department will host its fourth annual Brown Santa program starting Nov. 1.

After that date, applications for Milam County residents wanting to be served by the Brown Santa program will be taken.
