Phillips earns bachelor’s from St. Edwards Univ.

AUSTIN—LaShun Evette Phillips received her bachelor’s of arts degree in English from St. Edwards University on Aug. 17.

Phillips has been employed with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for the last 22 years. She also holds an associate of arts degree in General Studies from Austin Community College.

While studying at St. Edwards, Phillips wrote an essay that appeared in the school’s Spring 2011 New College Literary Journal. She also performed a prose reading of her essay at the Rising Star Baptist Church Black History Program in February 2012.

Her future plans are to do graduate work in the communications field and inter the education field upon her retirement from the state. She is also working on her memoir “Ms. Emma Clara’s Beauty Shop.”

Phillips is a 1990 graduate of Rockdale High School. She is the daughter of Leroy ad Doris Phil- lips of Rockdale and the granddaughter of the late Clarence and Alline Brown and Ernest and Ruenell Phillips.

RISD mandatory substitute training

A mandatory training for all new Rockdale ISD substitute teachers will be held 9-10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 14 at the Rockdale ISD Conference Room.

This training will include processes for the automated substitute service system Rockdale ISD has implemented.

Indiv iduals interested in becoming substitute teachers must attend this training in order to qualify for the substitute list. Applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalent and provide consent to a criminal background check.

Substitute applications can be picked up at the RISD Central Office prior to the training.
