MILAM 4-H NEWS
A nyone interested in entering spring major livestock shows with livestock or judging teams through 4-H need to be preparing to enter their livestock. Entry deadlines will be as follows completed and to the Milam County Extension Office. Fort Worth Livestock Show deadline is 5 p.m., Friday, Nov. 1. Deadline for San Antonio, San Angelo, Houston and Austin livestock shows is 5 p.m. Nov. 15.
Please stop by and pick up entry packets or reply via email and an entry packet will be emailed to you. We will need to have your livestock entries, orders for parking and gate passes, required signatures and payment for the total entry by the above deadlines. HOLIDAY CLASSIC CLINIC—Are you new to exhibiting livestock? Interested in beginning to show? Or just want to learn more about the project area and hone your skills? If so, we have an excellent opportunity for you. The annual Holiday Classic Showmanship Clinic and Prospect show will be held Nov. 9-10at the Bell County Expo Center in Belton.
This event is an excellent opportunity to learn about the basics of your livestock project. From selection, feeding, management, and showmanship will be discussed at a three hour clinic on Saturday. Sunday will be the showmanship and prospect show where your youth will have an opportunity to practice exhibiting their livestock project and get an idea of where they are and how they are progressing. The clinic and show are free of charge thanks to the generosity of many donors and includes a meal on Saturday evening. You must attend the Saturday clinic to enter the show on Sunday.
We are also selling raffle tickets for over $2,500 in prizes, including a set of Paul small animal scales, a showbox, $300 gift certificate and a $200 gift certificate to Sullivan’s Show Supply. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. All donations and monies from raffle are used to benefit youth projects and workshops. The Holiday Classic is a free educational event open to families interested in the youth livestock project. For more information, or to purchase raffle tickets, please contact the extension office.
LIVESTOCK JUDGING—Any 4-Her who is interested in participating in livestock judging contests with Milam County 4-H should contact the office by Nov. 11. We will have an informational meeting shortly after that date to learn more about the contest, schedule practices, as well as organize a group and gauge participation levels for upcoming contests so that entries can be made. Please contact the extension office for more information on this opportunity.
MCJLS DEADLINES—The 2014 Milam County Junior Livestock Show rules and entry form are now available on the Extension website http://milam. agrilife.org/.
Deadline for beef heifers is Nov. 1, contact steer superintendent. Lamb and goat tag-in is 4-6 p.m. Nov. 25 at the Youth Exhibition Building (YEB) in Cameron. Swine and breeding gilts tag-in is 4-6 p.m. Dec. 9 at the YEB. Broiler orders are due on Dec. 9 at the Milam County Extension Office.
4-H ENROLLMENT FEE INCREASE—Remember to complete your 4-H enrollment by Oct. 31 in order to pay the $20 fee. On Nov. 1 the enrollment fee goes up to $25 for youth 3rd grade through 18 years of age. Clover Kids (kindergarten through 2nd grade) and leaders are free throughout the year.
On the county website you will find helpful guidelines to help you re-enroll and update your family profile as well as help new 4-H families enroll.
