Fair sale total now $252,051

Late added money increases auction

The record breaking youth livestock auction at the 2013 Rockdale Fair has kept right on breaking records long after the last stall was cleaned up.

Cindy Hughes, sale secretary, said during the past week another $16,200 was received for animals sold during the Oct. 19 auction at Fair Park.

That raises the overall total to $252,051 from the $235,851 announced last week.

That’s by far the largest total in the sale’s 38-year history.

I n fac t , the or ig ina l ly announced total had already broken the all-time auction record, so the new total now exceeds the previous record, set in 2012, by a hefty 11 percent.

Another total also grew by $16,200. The Fair’s 38 livestock auctions have now raised $4,349,980 since 1977 for area 4-H and FFA youth.

And the livestock auction wasn’t the only sale record set at the 2013 Fair.

The commercial heifer sale, held on the same day in the main show barn, raised $227,415, also a record.

In the commercial heifer show’s nine years it has raised another

$460,573 for Milam County youngsters.

The 2013 Fair also saw $5,050 raised from a baked goods auction and $ 2,275 contributed to winners in the agricultural mechanics show.

Adding all those together, with the new total from the livestock auction, increases the amount raised for area youngsters in the 2013 Fair to $406,076.

“We appreciate all the support from the business community, all the volunteers, everyone who attended the Fair and all who helped make this year’s event such a tremendous success,” Billy Moreland, Rockdale Fair Association president, said.
