Tiger eighth graders battle for tie
The Rockdale junior varsity fell to Navasota, while the eight graders had to settle for a 36-36 tie.
The junior varsity (3-6) grabbed a 14-13 lead in the third quarter after a three-yard scoring pass from quarterback Andrew Perez to receiver Christian Lara while the duo also combined again on a 24-yarder.
Navasota scored twice in the final quarter to seal the win.
According to coaches, Lara, Perez, linemen Kacey Waxler and Travis Morgan and defensive backs Fred Henderson and David Franklin were standouts.
In a back-and-forth affair, the Tigers scored late to secure a tie with Austin Regents.
Jaqualyn Crawford’s four touchdow ns led the Tigers ( 3-2-1), including a 65-yard kick return for a touchdown with three minutes left in the game.
Quarterback Gunner Miller’s two-point conversion tied the game 36-36.
A Josh Springer interception in the end zone with 51 seconds left stopped Regents from taking the lead.
Crawford’s first score came in the first quarter from 48 yards out, followed in the second quarter from 58 yards away after he had set up his own score with an interception.
Miller and Springer interrupted Crawford’s scoring on a 40-yard bomb to tie the game 22-22 at halftime.
The touchdown was set up by a 35-yard pass from Miller to Tyler Lehmkuhl.
Crawford broke free on a 12-yard score to open the third quarter, before his game-tying effort in the fourth.
Crawford now has 15 touchdowns on the season.
Coaches said linebacker J.R. Hinojosa, cornerback Walker Crane, linemen Angel Banda, Dylan David and Sam Molina turned in outstanding play.
