Between 25 and 30 motorcycle enthusiasts braved the overnight cold and rain to participate in American Legion Carlyle Post 358’s motorcycle fun run, beginning and ending at VFW Post 6525. Les Davenport, Legion vice-commander, said the event also included a silent auction and barbecue sale and raised about $2,500. Money is being raised to complete a new Legion post building. Full Story
‘Deer season’ continues on south Milam roads
It’s become deer season just about every week on South Milam County roadways.
Two more vehicle- deer accidents were reported to the Department of Public Safety during the past week.
A third, unrelated, accident closed FM 908 briefly Monday afternoon while an 18-wheeler, which had overturned, was removed. Full Story

Rage at refusal to surrender cell phone
An incident in which a school administrator and police officer sustained bites—starting over refusal to give up a cell phone— resulted in a 12-year-old female being detained by police Friday. Full Story
Scammers starting holidays early in Milam
The holidays are always prime time for scammers but it appears they’ve started early in 2013.
Milam County Sheriff’s deputies investigated four scam calls during the week, all in northern or western parts of the county.
Scam attempts were reported on FM 485 and Ben Milam Road, along with a phone scam on County Road 237, all in the Cameron area. Full Story
One of the busiest members of the area law enforcement community has been in ‘new wheels’ for the past couple of months. Fred Lankford, animal control officer for the Rockdale Police Department, has been answering calls in a new vehicle, fully equipped for his specialty. It’s one of two new vehicles recently put in use by the department. Full Story
