Voss


Mr. Voss Mr. Voss Funeral services for lifelong Rockdale resident Edwin “Ed” Voss, 68, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, 2013, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Thorndale. Burial followed in the St. Paul Lutheran Ceme tery with Pastor James Mann and Pastor Sc ot t Schaller of St. Paul Lutheran Church officiating. Visitation was held in the evening of Saturday, Nov. 9, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale.

Mr. Voss was born March 17, 1945, in Rockdale to Edgar and Lonie (Junek) Voss.

Ed was a 1963 graduate of Rockdale High School. He played the coronet while in the Rockdale High School’s Big Blue Band and received a full band scholarship, which he used at Blinn College in Brenham.

At Blinn, he received his Associate of Arts degree in 1965. In 1967, he earned his Bachelor’s of Science degree from Sam Houston State University.

From 1968 to 1969, Ed taught science/biology and coached at Buckholts I.S.D.

He returned back to Sam Houston State University to continue his education and earned his Master’s of Science degree in biology in 1973.

While at Sam Houston he began working toward his pilot’s license and was four hours away from receiving his license. After completing his education,

Ed worked 29 years with Alcoa’s Sandow Mines as a heavy equipment operator from 1978 until his retirement in 2007.

He also earned his American FFA Degree, the highest honor one can obtain from the National FFA Organization, formerly known as Future Farmers of America.

On Jan. 26, 1974, Ed married his soul mate, Joyce Wegner, at St. John Lutheran Church Prairie Hill in Brenham.

Edwin was baptized on May 30, 1975, and conf irmed on June 1, 1975, by Pastor Waldemar Wendel at Peace Lutheran Church in Rockdale.

He was a farmer and rancher throughout his life and his passion was raising cattle and deer hunting.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Thorndale.

Ed went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at Scott & White Hospital in Temple after heart complications.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lonie, in 1963 and his father, Edgar, in 1972.

Survivors include his loving wife of 39 years, Joyce Voss of Rockdale; their daughter, Shannon Voss-Clinard and husband Glenn of Rockdale; granddaughter, Riley Clinard of Rockdale; and numerous cousins and aunts.

Pallbearers were Billy Felfe, Lonnie Felfe, David Goetz, Marty Irwin, Leroy Stephens and Stanley Stork.

Honorary pallbearers were Henry James Bradford, Frank Diaz, Rufus Doss, Gary Jenke, Gus Praesel, Richard Pierce and Kenneth Wiederhold.
