Svrcek takes top prize in Legion Casino Night

Kenny Svrcek won the grand prize of $2,500 in a Casino Night fund raiser Saturday at the KC Hall to benefit American Legion Carlyle Post 358.

Winners of $100 prizes were Jessica Twohig, John Tibbits, Birdie Kristoff, Paul Leopold, Brian Twohig, Svrcek, Daniel Damioach, Nick Guzman, Zephyr Marek, Billy Simank, Maria Zamora, Tom Hormuth, Jerome Russo, Tommy Grimes and Daniel Marek.

Trustees change time for meetings to 6 p.m.

Rockdale ISD trustees, meeting in regular session Monday in the Central Administration Building, voted to change meeting times on the third Monday of each month from 5:30 to 6 p.m.

The change will be effective with the January meeting. The board’s December session is a noon luncheon meeting.

Also Monday, trustees received a “clean” annual audit report from Atchley & Associates.

Chamber needs booths for Christmas event

Rockdale Chamber of Commerce is looking for vendors for their annual “Christmas in the City” in Downtown Rockdale, according to Chamber secretary Denise Brock.

“We are needing arts and crafts vendors, as well as food booths,” Brock said.

Surplus food giveaway Thursday at KC Hall

The monthly third Thursday surplus food giveaway is set for 9 a.m. Thursday at the KC Hall, according to Denise Sifuentes, spokesperson.

“Since the distribution relies totally on volunteer help, volunteers are needed and greatly appreciated,” she said. “Clients are asked to bring sacks or boxes for groceries.”

TxDOT lane change ‘not yet’ on FM 486 bridge

The Texa s Depa r tment of Transportation (TxDOT) wanted to shift traffic from the “old bridge” to the new one on FM 486 near San Gabriel Tuesday, but it didn’t happen.

Travelers were greeted with a sign saying the shift would be made Thursday.

When the shift is made on the $1.9-million project traffic will continue to be controlled by the existing temporary traffic signal which allows crossing in one direction at a time.

RDA downtown yule decoration contest set

Rockdale Downtown Association is sponsoring a downtown Christmas decorating contest, according to Chris Dyess, RDA president.

“We are trying to encourage as many businesses downtown to decorate in time for the Dec. 7 Christmas festivities,” Dyess said. Prizes will be awarded, $100 first place, $50 second place and $25 third place. Prizes will be awarded at 6:30 p.m. on December 7, Dyess said.

Because of a typo, the number of a small county road being abandoned was incorrectly listed in last week’s commissioners story. The road involved is CR 378, not CR 328.

Milano council finalizes three holiday events

MILANO—There will be three Christmas- themed events in Milano during the coming weeks, as city council members finalized plans during their regular meeting Monday night at the civic center.

On Nov. 30 a downtown lighting ceremony will take place at the Bailey Bank Building, followed by hay rides and refreshments to the First Baptist Church. On Dec. 7, the city will hold its annual Christmas parade and meal. OnDec.14,judgingof Christmas decorations will be held, followed by a community wide Christmas sing-along.

The council also continued to work on a dog/animal ordinance.

Annual ‘Tree of Angels’ ceremony set Dec. 5th

The Milam County & District Attorney’s Office will sponsor the annual “Tree of Angels” ceremony at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, immediately following the Cameron Christmas Parade, at the Milam County Museum located at 112 West First Street.

The “Tree of Angels” program is celebrated each year across Texas and enables survivors of violent crime and victims’ families to place an angel ornament on a special Christmas tree time. Members of the armed services will also be remembered and honored.

Alcoa Retirees yule meeting set Dec. 12th

Alcoa retirees will gather for their annual Christmas meeting Thursday Dec. 12 at the Alcoa Lake Training Center.

Doug Williams, spokesman, said setup is at 4 p.m. with doors opening at 5 and a meal at 6 p.m. after the meeting.

The meeting is open to retirees and surviving spouses. “Retirees are invited to bring their favorite dessert and there will be a gift exchange,” he said.

City of Thorndale casts all AD votes for Culp

Thorndale City Council members, meeting last Wednesday, cast their 46 appraisal district (AD) votes for Don Culp.

The council also passed a “five percent” rule pertaining to manufactured home permits and discussed the possibility of annexation, directing administrator Keith Keisling to obtain more information.
