Two charged on meth offenses in unrelated cases during week

Two men were charged with unrelated drug offenses two days apart in Rockdale during the past week.

Police said Robert Chance Baxter, 34, was arrested Saturday in an incident police said involved a suspect “attempting to destroy methamphetimes in a vehicle.”

Lt. J. D. Newlin said Baxter had been bonded out of jail only a few hours previous to the arrest.

Baxter was charged with tampering/ fabricating evidence with intent to impair and burglary of a habitation in connection with a break-in at a Rockdale residence.

Bond was denied on the tampering charge and was set at $30,000 on the burglary and Baxter remains in the county jail.

A 27-year-old Cameron man was arrested Thursday and charged with possession of a controlled substance, a case also involving methamphetamines.

Ricky Cami lo Vargas was also charged with driving while license invalid.

Newlin said the drug charge was in connection with an incident in which a baggy of meth was located by a member of the public outside a convenience store.

Vargas was released after posting $5,000 bond and was fined $422 on the traffic offense.

COUNTERFEIT—Newlin said police were alerted to counterfeit one-dollar bills during the week but said they were not of the caliber of bills floated by a recent counterfeiting gang.

“The ink was running on some of them,” Newlin said

OFFENSES—Police said a 12-year-old female was detained for carrying an illegal knife to a school campus.

Also, a 15-year-old male was detained for an assault on a public servant charge at the high school campus, according to police.

Newlin said an unauthorized use of a motor vehicle case involved an attempted Internet sale of a vehicle which was eventually located in Bastrop.

Other offense investigations begun during the past week included assault, theft and disorderly conduct.

ACCIDENTS—Police termed a crash involving a parked vehicle a “hit and run” at 10:08 p.m. Saturday in the 600 block of Vogel.

Police said the parked vehnicle was a 1994 Ford pickup belonging to Colt Pounders.

The suspect vehicle is a 1997 black Ford pickup driven by Charles Ramsey Zinn of Rockdale and has major front end damage.

Police also responded to a one-vehicle crash at 9:23 p.m. Sunday in front of 510 East Cameron (US 79).

Police said a 2010 Dodge pickup driven by Irene Malone of Rockdale was in collision with a utility pole.

CITATIONS—Police said traffic tickets issued during the week included 21 for speeding, five for expired motor vehicle insurance, three for no insurance and one for failure to report change of name or address.

Two citations each were also issued for possession of drug paraphernalia and disorderly conduct.

SERVICE CALLS—There were 147 total calls for service during the past week and 97 calls were received through the 911 system.
