Chamber yule lighting contest Dec. 15 and 16
Have your lights on Dec. 15 and 16 if you want to be judged in the annual Christmas lighting and decoration contest sponsored by the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce.
Denise Brock, Chamber staffer, said anyone may call the Chamber at 512-446-2030 to nominate in the following categories: Residential, business, yard/sidewalk, traditional, whimsical, porch, animated, door, window, lights and best overall.
Winners will have a group photo made at the Chamber office at 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19.
Milano Christmas parade set Saturday
MILANO—The City of Milano will hold its annual Christmas parade Saturday, starting at 10:30 a.m., according to city secretary Carolyn Vinton.
The parade will begin in the MHS football field parking lot, and make its way downtown. Entry forms will be available at 9:30 a.m.
Divisions for the parade are: best overall, small animals, small motorized/battery operated, vehicles/ tractor, floats, bicycle/walking and horses/wagons.
Winners will be announced following the parade at the civic center where a free, traditional Christmas dinner will be served, Vinton said.
Bloodmobile to visit St. Paul’s on Sunday
THORNDALE—Scott & White’s Bloodmobile will visit the campus of St. Paul Lutheran Church from 8 a.m. to 12-noon Sunday.
Donors will have their names entered in a drawing for a T-shirt quilt.
Donors will receive a T-shirt, free game of bowling or laser tag at Spare Time Fun Center in Temple or two free games of bowling at Mel’s Lone Star Bowling Alley in Temple.
Dates for 2014 blood drives are Feb. 2, March 30, June 8, Aug. 3, Sept. 28 and Nov. 23, all Sundays.
Rockdale school board to meet at noon Tuesday
Rockdale ISD trustees will meet for their annual Christmas luncheon Tuesday to be followed by a 12-noon school board meeting in the family and consumer science room at Rockdale High School.
Agenda items include an order issuing RISD tax refunding bonds, setting parameters for the bonds and authorizing the superintendent, or chief financial officer and board president to approve items connected with them. The board will also receive reports on board training and the 2013-14 district and campus improvement plan.
Chamber offering free heaters for the needy
With cold weather on the way as soon as this weekend, the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce has a limited number of heaters for free distribution to persons that don’t have heat, or inadequate heat, in their homes.
Heaters may be obtained by visiting the Chamber office, 1203 West Cameron (US 79).
Hours are 8 a.m to 12-noon and 1 to 5 p.m., weekdays.
City doesn’t require ‘water leak insurance’
In what’s become an annual task, City Manager Kelvin Knauf reminds Rockdale water customers that persons attempting to sell “water leak insurance” do not represent, and are not affiliated with, the city.
“We don’t require nor recommend such insurance,” Knauf said. “If such solicitors represent to local residents that what they offer is required by the city, that’s not true,” he said.
Milano ISD trustees set to meet on Thursday
MILANO—Milano ISD board members are set to meet in regular session at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Milano High School library.
Agenda items include changing financial advisors for the district from Coastal Securities Inc. to US Capital Advisors and casting ballots for the Milam County Appraisal District board of directors.
RDA downtown yule decoration contest set
Rockdale Downtown Association is sponsoring a downtown Christmas decorating contest, according to Chris Dyess, RDA president.
“We are trying to encourage as many businesses downtown to decorate in time for the Dec. 7 Christmas festivities,” Dyess said. Prizes will be awarded, $100 first place, $50 second place and $25 third place. Prizes will be awarded at 6:30 p.m. on December 7, Dyess said.

Annual ‘Tree of Angels’ ceremony set Thursday
The Milam County & District Attorney’s Office will sponsor the annual “Tree of Angels” ceremony at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, immediately following the Cameron Christmas Parade, at the Milam County Museum located at 112 West First Street.
The “Tree of Angels” program is celebrated each year across Texas and enables survivors of violent crime and victims’ families to place an angel ornament on a special Christmas tree. Members of the armed services will also be remembered and honored.
Participants are asked to bring an angel ornament tagged with the first and last name of the person to be remembered or honored.

Sixth nativity display set this weekend
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints will present its sixth annual nativity display on Friday, Dec. 6 from 5 until 8 p.m. and on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 10 a.m. until noon and from 2 until 8 p.m. at the church, 310 Calhoun Street in Rockdale.
This display has been a popular Christmas season event in Rockdale and features a wide variety of nativities loaned by local families.
Persons wanting to share their nativity to be displayed may drop them off Monday-Friday at Dr. Steve Daniels’ Rockdale Veterinary Clinic, 618 West US 79.
Emanicipet visit slated Thursday at S&S Auto
Emancipet, offering low-cost spaying and neutering for dogs and cats, will visit S&S Auto in Rockdale at Thursday, Dec. 5.

Alcoa Retirees yule meeting set Dec. 12th
Alcoa retirees will gather for their annual Christmas meeting Thursday Dec. 12 at the Alcoa Lake Training Center.
Doug Williams, spokesman, said setup is at 4 p.m. with doors opening at 5 and a meal at 6 p.m. after the meeting.
“Everyone should bring a gift to exchange,” Williams said.
ACS reschedules wine and cheese to Sunday
The American Cancer Society wine and cheese party has been rescheduled from Friday to Sunday due to Rockdale’s quarterfinal football playoff game.
Hours and location remain the same, 6 to 8 p.m. at the home of Colby and Brooksy Fisher 1500 Sager.
‘Christmas at the Kay’ scheduled for Dec. 15th
A “Christmas at The Kay” event is set for 3:30 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 15 at the Kay Theatre, according to Bob Burnett, spokesperson.
Admission is one non-perishable canned good to donate for Rockdale Food Pantry.
He said entertainment includes the First Presbyterian and Meadowbrook Baptist choirs and the Communities in Concert Band.

Fort Hood bronzes will be displayed Thursday
The Bistro Restaurant in downtown Cameron will display the 13 memorial bronzes victims from the Fort Hood shooting from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday.
One honors Cameron resident Mike Cahill. Each bronze was designed by the family of the fallen and will be part of a memorial.
