Early voting continues in special city election

Early voting continues in the special east ward city council election in Rockdale.

According to city secretary Terry Blanchard, as of Tuesday evening, only 13 absentee ballots had been cast.

Denise Wallace and Leroy Phillips are vying for the unexpired term of an east ward city council position that’s been vacant since September.

Election day is Saturday, Dec. 21.

Early voting is being held at City Hall. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, through Dec. 17.

Extended early voting hours, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., will be Monday, Dec. 16, and Tuesday, Dec. 17 only, according to City Manager Kelvin Knauf.

Last day to submit an application for a mail-in ballot is Dec. 14 and applications must be submitted by 5 p.m., Knauf said.

‘Christmas at the Kay’ scheduled for Dec. 15th

A “Christmas at The Kay” event is set for 3:30 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 15 at the Kay Theatre, according to Bob Burnett, spokesperson.

Admission is one non-perishable canned good to donate for Rockdale Food Pantry.

He said entertainment includes the First Presbyterian and Meadowbrook Baptist and St. John’s United Methodist Church choirs and the Communities in Concert Band.

St. Paul blood drive rescheduled for Sunday

THORNDALE—The Scott & White Blood Drive at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Thorndale has been rescheduled for Sunday, Dec. 15, spokesperson Teresa Ging announced.

The event was set for last weekend, but postponed due to icy weather conditions.

“During the season of giving, be a lifesaver and give the gift of life, donate a pint of blood,” Ging said.

Chamber offering free heaters for the needy

With more cold weather on the way, the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce has a limited number of heaters for free distribution to persons that don’t have heat, or inadequate heat, in their homes.

Heaters may be obtained by visiting the Chamber office, 1203 West Cameron (US 79).

Hours are 8 a.m to 12-noon and 1 to 5 p.m., weekdays.

City to flush fire hydrants on Dec. 18

Rockdale city crews will flush fire hydrants in town overnight on Dec. 18, according to city manager Kelvin Knauf.

Flushing will take place on the east and west sides of town.

“Residents are reminded to run their cold water a few minutes the next morning,” Knauf said.

Alcoa Retirees yule meeting set Thursday

Alcoa retirees will gather for their annual Christmas meeting Thursday Dec. 12 at the Alcoa Lake Training Center.

Doug Williams, spokesman, said setup is at 4 p.m. with doors opening at 5 and a meal at 6 p.m. after the meeting.

“Everyone should bring a gift to exchange,” Williams said.

Milano board switches financial advisors

MILANO—Milano ISD board members changed financial advisors for the district from Coastal Securities Inc. to US Capital Advisors during their session on Thursday at the MHS library.

Trustees also cast all their ballots for the Milam County Appraisal District for Travis Yoakum and hired Amanda Keen for an elementary teaching position.

GMA 12 to hold joint meeting December 19

MILANO—The Groundwater Management Area (GMA) 12 will hold a joint meeting at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 19 at the Milano Civic Center, 120 West Ave. E.

The GMA 12 is designated by the Texas Water Development Board and consists of the Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District (GCD), Fayette County GCD, Lost Pines GCD, Mid-East Texas GCD and Brazos Valley GCD.

Agenda items for the meeting include an update from each of the GMA 12’s GCDs and to discuss representation for the GMA 12 on regional water planning groups.

Commissioners move deed of Bryant bridge

CAMERON—Milam County Commissioners voted to move deed ownership of the Bryant Station Bridge, located on County Road 275 at the Little River near Buckholts, during their regular meeting on Monday at the Milam County Courthouse.

The court voted to move the deed to the Bryant Station Cemetery Association.

Other agenda times included fianncial updates and court case updates from various county officials.

Milano council to name decoration winners

MILANO—Winners of the City of Milano annual Christmas Decorations Contest will be announced during the Dec. 17 city council meeting on Monday.

The meeting gets underway at 6:30 p.m. at the Milano Civic Center, 120 W. Ave. E. Winners will be notified before the meeting.
