Alcoa closing atomizer by March
37 to lose jobs at last Rockdale Operations facility
Alcoa has announced it is “curtailing” production of powdered aluminum at its Rockdale atomizer.
When the facility is closed—not later than the first of March, 2014, according to Jim Hodson, company spokesman— there will no longer be any aluminum products being produced at a site which once boasted the largest aluminum smelter in the United States. Full Story
WHALE OF A CHRISTMAS
Temple of Praise’s “Jonah and the Whale” won the best overall prize in Rockdale’s Christmas Parade, which drew a large crowd downtown Saturday night. The City of Thrall’s igloo, snowman and penguins perfectly captured the spirit of the day which saw near freezing temperatures and cold north winds of more than 20 miles per hour. Full Story
New water meter installation start eyed during week
‘Accurate, fast, detect leaks’, city says
While most of Rockdale’s new “smart” water meters won’t be installed until next year, the city’s contractor will install some this week if the weather cooperates.
The “e-meters,” which can be read by computer and are touted as more accurate than the meters they will replace, are expected to usher in a new era for city customers. Full Story

Luminant bankruptcy pushed back
Still no shutdowns forecast at Sandow
While energy analysts are still predict a bankruptcy filing for Energy Future Holdings (EFH), parent company of Luminant, it’s no longer expected by the first of the year.
That’s because EFH made a $270 million payment to unsecured creditors just over a month ago, forestalling the need for a 2013 bankruptcy filing. Full Story

Denise Holmes and Leroy Phillips are vying for the unexpired term created by the resignation of Melody Dawson in September.

A true Christmas miracle—100 years ago
Rockdale plumber saved 44 lives in devastating 1913 Brazos flood
Christmas season “miracles” come from a variety of sources, but for 44 flood-stranded victims of the Brazos River 100 years ago one came from Rockdale.
Walter Suess, a Rockdale plumber, launched a light skiff into the roiling six-mile-long lake that had mostly consumed the community of Valley Junction, and brought them to safety. Full Story
