Merry (Brrrrr) Christmas Rockdale!
70-year old ‘Cheyenne Mountain’ dining car came back to life Saturday as a warm place to have coffee and dessert. Rockdale’s annual Christm a s parade and par ty, delayed by a week to Saturday due to winter weather, didn’t quite escape it all.
Near-freezing temperatures and winds of up to 20 miles an hour failed to chill the enthusiasm of those who did attend, though, and it was all capped off (and ear muffed off) by a crowd of several hundred for the night lighted parade.
The I& GN Depot was focal point for day events.
Denise Brock, Chamber of Commerce staffer, listed parade results as follows:
Best overall—“Jonah and the Whale,” Temple of Praise.
Presidential award— Milam County Sherif f ’s Department Brown Santa.
Bes t out- of- town float—“It’s a Great Day to be a Thorndale Bulldog,” with Miss Thorndale.
KRXT’s Charlie and Viva McGregor were grand marshals for the night parade. Best decorated float— “Santa’s Train,” Rockdale Leo Club.
Best religious entry— “Jesus is the Reason for the Season,” Rising Star Baptist Church.
Best car—Big Tex Fireworks, 1903 Oldsmobile, Jerry and DeDe McPeek.
Thinking real hard about it, four-year-old Zackery Smith gives his Christmas list to Santa (Tony Walko) in depot.
Black Jack VFD firefighters walked the parade route to pass out goodies to delighted children along the way.
All bundled up for the kids train rides on Milam Avenue.
Model trains were fun, and warm, inside depot building.
Rising Star Baptist Church won the parade’s Best Religious Entry top prize with this entry, ‘Jesus is the Reason for the Season.’
