Big Blue musicians make all-region bands

Geritt Davenport earns all-state audition

Reporter/Marie Bakken On Dec. 14, 22 members of Rockdale High School’s Big Blue Band particiapted in the Association of Texas Small School Bands (ATSSB) high school Region 18-26 All-Region auditions held in Smithville.

Four Rockdale musicians were selected for the symphonic band and 10 for the concert band.

Geritt Davenport, a sophomore, was selected as second chair in the symphonic band, advancing him to the area competition.

He will have an all-state band audition on Jan. 11 at Robinson High School.

“Our students were well prepared and represented our school and community with pride,” Adrian A. Acevedo, RISD director of bands, said.

Those selected for the bands will perform on Saturday, Jan. 18 at Texas State University’s Evans Auditorium in San Marcos.

Flute

Jennifer Zelaya, sophomore, third chair, concert band.

Oboe

Ryann Morgan, sophomore, first chair, concert band.

Bassoon

Shay Davenport, sophomore, second chair, concert band.

Clarinet

Abbi Moreland, freshman, 13th chair, symphonic band; Emily Wagner, junior, first chair, concert band; Brian Blanchard, freshman, fourth chair, concert band; Melanie Ibarra, senior, 14th chair, concert band; Ashton Betchan, sophomore, 17th chair, concert band.

French Horn

Gabby Garcia, sophomore, ninth chair, symphonic band; Emily Ibarra, sophomore, 10th chair, symphonic band; Autumn Davenport, senior, sixth chair, concert band.

Trumpet

Geritt Davenport, sophomore, second chair, symphonic band, advanced to area competition.

Euphonium

Kandace Kocian, junior, first chair, concert band.

Trombone Brett Brockenbush, freshman, 14th chair, concert band.

“We are very proud of the work these students have done to prepare for this competition and we are looking forward to their performance with the ATSSB Region 18/26 All-Region Band,” Acevedo said.

Also trying out were: Jessie Sorenson, f lute; Katy Salazar, f lute; Alexis Garcia, flute; Joey Montelongo, alto saxophone; Lily Schweitzer, alto saxophone; Sabrina Vargas, alto saxophone; Tyler Rodriguez, trumpet; Travis Sorenson, tuba.
