2013 included a ton of revisionist sports history

The 2013 sports vernacular included a lot of stories with references that included the word “since” in them.

Such as, the first time a team or individual had accomplished this tremendous feat “since.”

That one adverb helped to make this past year one that will not soon be forgotten by its participants and fans.

JANUARY—Former Rockdale star Le’Raven Clark is named a freshman All-American at Texas Tech as a lineman...Milano defeated Rockdale 62-48 in basketball behind Dominique Messer’s 33 points and 17 rebounds... Rockdale lineman Josh Pelzel attends the Under Armour camp in Ft. Lauderdale... No. 2 Mumford staved off No. 14 Milano 51-42 in front of an overflow crowd in Milano... Tiger quarterback Ethan Brinkley and Milano receiver Dominique Messer sign to play football at West Texas A&M.

FEBRUARY—The Lady Tigers basketball team earned a spot in the playoffs for the first time since 2005. They fell to Waco LaVega in the first round, 69-23... The Rockdale boys team dropped three straight to miss the playoffs... In their second district meeting, 33-0 Mumford edges Milano 75-66 in front of another full house in Mumford... The Thorndale Lady Dogs reached the regional finals for the fourth time in the decade, but fell to Snook in the finale 40-39... Thorndale’s Fabien Gomez, Milano’s Dominique Messer and Rockdale linebackers James David and Markus Hayes are named All- State.

MARCH—LaGrange (girls) and Giddings (boys) captured the 55th Rockdale Relays... For the second straight season, Mumford held off Milano in the regional finals to earn a trip to the state tournament... Rockdale’s Wendell Mitchell was named the District 18-3A most valuable player... The Rockdale baseball team was on a nine-game winning streak as district neared... Thorndale’s Olivia Atkins and Milano’s Dominique Messer were named All-State in basketball... Jamie Cjazkowski became Rockdale’s first state champion in powerlifting.

APRIL—Kayleigh Montelongo became the Lady Tigers’ all-time winningest pitcher with 44 wins... The brother-sister act of Jacob and Kasey Crump earned a trip to the regional tennis tournament after capturing the mixed doubles championship in district. They were third at regional... The Rockdale golf team bagged its fourth straight district championship and fifth in six years behind sophomore Tyler Pruett’s 155... Freshman sensation Dae Dae Robertson captured district titles in both the 100-and-300-meter hurdles. Nine other Tigers qualified for area... Led by Mik Mader, the Milano golf team earned a second consecutive trip to the state golf tournament where they finished seventh... The Rockdale golf team made its third appearance at state in the last four years and finished 11th... The Lady Tigers’ softball team claimed their first district championship since 2007... Milano’s Aubrie King of Mumford was named the Class A Player of the Year.

MAY—Scorching her own school record in the 300-meter hurdles, Dae Dae Robertson earned a trip to the state track meet and placed eighth... Milano’s Dominique Messer earned gold medals in both the triple jump and the 400-meter dash at the state track meet... Thorndale’s Keon Mays picked up a silver in the 800-meter run... Both the Thorndale and Milano softball teams were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs... The Lady Tigers’ softball team swept Huntington 7-4, 6-4 to move into the quarterfinals round for the first time since 2006. They were ousted by Pollock Central 6-0, 2-0... Rockdale baseball coach Clay Cox announced he was leaving to take a job at West Alabama... Former Rockdale standout Larry Jackson of Texas A&M was named the top college trainer by the CSCSee CA... Rockdale’s Josh Pelzel and James David verbally committed to Baylor to play football... Rockdale long distance runner Juan Rubio signed with the Southwest Assembly of God... Rockdale’s Ethan Brinkley was tabbed to participate in the THSBCA all-star game... The Rockdale 7-on-7 team qualified for the state tournament for the sixth straight year... Former Lady Tigers’ basketball coach Janet Havelka retired from teaching. She had retired from coaching six years earlier as the program’s winningest coach.

JUNE—Former Tiger basketball player Doug Randall passed away at age 56... Rockdale’s Ethan Brinkley was named firstteam all-state in baseball... Ronnie Jonse of Elgin was named the new Tiger baseball coach... The Tiger football team was picked second in district behind Navasota by Texas Football... Rockdale’s Ethan Brinkley and Austin Caffey, Milano softball player Hayleigh LaGrone were named All-Brazos Valley... The Lady Tigers’ record-setting pitcher Kayleigh Montelongo was named honorable mention all-state.

JULY—Former retired Rockdale basketball coach Dusty Loewewas hired as an assistant by Milano alongside alumnus Jacob Dent, the new basketball coach... Thorndale hired Rockdale assistant John Kovar as its new head basketball coach, replacing Doug Franklin... The Rockdale 7-on-7 team made it to the Sweet 16 at the state tournament... Former Rockdale star Le’Raven Clark of Texas Tech was named an Outland Trophy candidate... Thorndale’s Riley Schaefer was named allstate at shortstop.

AUGUST—Eighty-nine Rockdale players showed up for the first day of summer football workouts. Milano spiked Rockdale in the volleyball season opener... The “Meet The Tigers” cake auction raised $8,320.

SEPTEMBER—As Austin Caffey became Rockdale’s alltime leading receiver, Rockdale sacked Salado 47-21 in the season and home opener... Milano also won its opener against the Del Valle JV 28-0 while Thorndale fell to Chilton 41-14... Finding trouble in the red zone, the Tigers fell to Burnet 20-9 on the road... Milano remained unbeaten with a 26-6 win over Normangee, while Thorndale captured its first win of the season, 54-12, over Somerville... No. 1 Cameron retained possession of the bell for the first time in seven years with a 51-33 come-from behind victory over the Tigers... Thorndale flogged Florence 56-2, while Milano took advantage of five miscues to get past Iola 27-14... Rockdale dropped its third straight, losing to Liberty Hill 49-28... Thorndale’s contest with Hallettsville Sacred Heart was canceled because of lightening and Milano was open.

OCTOBER—Milano’s Aubrie King, who plays at Mumford, signed to play basketball at St. Edward’s in Austin... Elijah Brooks tied a school record with five touchdowns as Rockdale smashed Smithville 41-13 to stop their three-game skid... Thorndale blanked Granger 52-0, while Milano fell to No. 3 Chilton 20-6... Rockdale used eight turnovers to romp over Hillsboro 59-7... Milano’s Jordan Millar tallied 437 yards of total offense and five touchdowns in the Eagles’ 35-22 victory over the College Station JV... Darius Brooks’ 107 yards and three touchdowns led Thorndale to a 49-10 win over San Saba... Clayton Gibbs established a new school record with five touchdown passes in the Tigers’ 42-21 win over rival Taylor in the District 18-3A opener in the 80th meeting between the two schools... Thorndale captured its district opener, besting defending champion Weimar 28-22... Milano stumbled in its league lifter to Burton 28-18... Rockdale earned a playoff berth with its 33-21 victory over Madisonville on the road... Quarterback Jordan Millar’s seven touchdowns helped secure a must-win over Somerville 50-21... Thorndale took the week off to prepare for fellow unbeaten Flatonia... Donny Brooks, Tony Brooks, Ken Esten Cooke, Kevin Cooke, Cecilia Holder and Gordon McKee became the seventh class of inductees in the Rockdale Sports Hall of Honor... Defending state champion Navasota scored three times in the fourth quarter for a 42-21 comeback win over Rockdale... The Lady Tigers’ volleyball team earned its first playoff berth since 2006. They fell to N0. 8 Lorena in bi-district... Thorndale handed Flatonia its first district loss 27-7... Milano kept its playoff hopes alive with a 32-20 win over Granger... The Thorndale boys cross country team captured the district title.

NOVEMBER—Thorndale claimed a portion of its first district crown since 2009 with a resounding 65-3 victory over rival Thrall in the battle for supremacy of Highway 79... Jordan Millar rushed for 273 yards and four touchdowns in Milano’s win over Bartlett... No. 13 Milano and Thorndale both took their first round matches in the state playoffs... Clayton Gibbs fractured his own record with six touchdown passes as the Tigers blitzed Caldwell 69-21 in the regular season wrapup... Holland stung Thorndale 36-33 in a regular season finale upset, preventing the Bulldogs from claiming the District 13A title outright. Thorndale led 33-13 with under 10 minutes left in the game... After a one-year absence, Milano returned to the playoff picture after a 28-6 win over Snook... Thorndale’s volleyball season ended in area with a loss to Cayuga... Avenging a loss from 2012, Rockdale dominated one-loss Lorena 55-28 for the Tigers’ first playoff win since 2008... Milano rang up Runge 41-18 in bi-district... The No. 13 Milano volleyball team made its first trek to the regional tournament since 2005. The Lady Eagles fell to state tournament entrant Lindsay to finish 33-7... Rockdale captured back-to-back playoff games for the first time since 1998 after annihilating Center 75-28 in area play. The 75 points is a modern-day record... Milano reached the third round of the playoffs for the first time in school history after bouncing back for a 44-22 win over Bruni behind Jordan Millar’s 268 yards rushing and four touchdowns... Constructing a 39-6 first half lead, Thorndale cruised past Kenedy 60-7 in area. DECEMBER—For the first time since the 1976 state championship run, Rockdale would be playing in the quarterfinals after clipping one-loss Coldspring 21-14 in regionals... Thorndale was looking at an appearance in the quarterfinals since 2006 by edging Ganado 21-17 at regional... Milano’s historic season ended with a 43-0 loss to unbeaten and No. 4 Falls City. The Eagles were 10-3, only the second time in school history they won 10 games... The UIL announced its cutoff numbers for the next realignment in February and Rockdale will drop down a class for the first time since 1980... Wendell Mitchell broke Clyde Luetge’s 59-year old record of 51 points with 54 against Brazos Christian... Milano’s Myka Morehead was named all-state in volleyball... Rockdale’s blue streak was stopped with a 42-7 loss to 14-0 Fairfield in the state quarterfinals at the Waco ISD in 28-degree temperatures... Thorndale’s hopes of capturing a fourth state championship were dashed by Shiner 14-10... Former Rockdale star Le’Raven Clark was named first team All- Big 12 for Texas Tech... Cameron defeated Wall 35-21 to win their second straight Class 2A crown.
