Here’s your signs

A landmark Rockdale business sign had to be taken down Thursday afternoon after it was struck by an 18-wheeler that morning.

Police said the Kountry Inn Motel & Restaurant sign was hit at 8:51 a.m. by a dump truck rig operated by Monte Oertli of Round Rock. The truck tractor was registered to Viking Construction of Georgetown and the dump-truck trailer belongs to S&M Business of Austin, according to police.

The truck involved in the incident, parked in the middle lane of West Cameron Avenue (US 79), is shown behind the sign in the bottom photo.

There were no injuries. The sign sustained extensive damages to both I-beam supports and was razed later in the day. Owner Roger Booker said plans are to erect another, similar, sign.

The incident was investigated by Ofc. Albert Diver of the Rockdale Police Department (top photo) as another prominent sign in the background bore an ironic inscription. Reporter/MIke Brown
