Balloon release set for Lexington siblings
Cody, Kayla Ruthven battling rare disease, headed for NIH treatment in Maryland
LEXINGTON—A balloon release is set for 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, for a Lexington brother and sister, who are headed to Maryland to participate in a clinical drug study they hope will save their lives.
Cody and Kayla Ruthven, of Lexington, (brother and sister) are flying to The National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, according to their mother Dena Ruthven. Full Story

Assaults on police, drug charges in wild first week
The first week of 2014 was a wild one for Rockdale police, who made three arrests on drug charges and had two incidents in which police said department employees were assaulted.
A 33-year-old Rockdale man, who was the subject of a manhunt for several weeks in the winter of 2011, was charged with seven offenses as a result of one of the incidents. Full Story
Holidays over: Sheriff’s deputies answer four ‘trash dumping’ calls
You can tell the holidays are over.
The Milam County Sheriff’s Department answered four calls to reports of persons illegally dumping trash in widely scattered areas of the county during the past week.
Three calls were on the same day.
Deputies were called to a County Road 415 location at 10:10 a.m. Dec. 30 for a trash dumping report. Full Story

New storm spotter training session set Monday in Cameron
Severe weather recognition program’s focus
The National Weather Service will sponsor a Skywarn severe weather program from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Cameron Volunteer Fire Department fire station, according to Mark Fox, warning coordination meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Fort Worth..
The program is held in partnership with Milam County Emergency Management. Full Story
The so-called Polar Vortex which brought sub-freezing weather to 90 percent of the United States, brushed up against Rockdale Monday and Tuesday with minimal effects. Low water pressure in part of Rockdale early Monday was traced to ice forming inside the city water system at the Mill Street water plant. Full Story
Two January flu cases in Milam
With the season ramping up in Texas, we have noticed that so are Milam County cases of Influenza.
The level of flu-like illness is currently classified as “high” in Texas, and medical providers are seeing an increase in flu in multiple parts of the state. Full Story
