RJH students on the radio

Allen Sanders Allen Sanders This week our campus highlight belongs to the Rockdale Junior High School and principal April Eschberger would like to share with you information regarding the RJH Gifted and Talented project that is presented weekly on KRXT.

Many of you may have heard the junior high gifted and talented (GT) students on the local radio station, KRXT, on Thursday mornings reporting on happenings at Rockdale Junior High. This radio show is an ongoing project created by the GT students.

At the beginning of the school year the students and sponsor Cheryln Ellis brainstormed project ideas for the school year. One of the top projects on the list was a radio or television broadcast. The class wanted a real-life project that was relevant to them and the students were interested in technology and in the communications field.

Ellis then contacted Charlie McGregor at the radio station. He was extremely excited to help launch our project and has been instrumental in helping our students understand broadcasting and the production of the radio show.

McGregor came to the junior high with radio equipment and talked to the students about radio broadcasting and the use of the equipment. The first couple of broadcasts he came and helped students record on his equipment. Now the students record on a microphone and change the recording to an MP3 file to be sent to McGregor to play on the radio. The students even were taught about voice tones and inflections used for audio recordings.

Before any news is recorded students brainstorm on topics to report. The students then write out their broadcast. Often they interview people to include that information in their broadcast. Students report on upcoming events at the junior high, sports scores and some community events. When the junior high was collecting canned goods and helping with Christmas Round-Up they reported on this community event.

Students take turns each week recording the broadcast. Students are really enjoying the project and are anxious each week to write about topics and record the information. The students plan to visit the radio station later this year to learn more about radio broadcasting.

To hear these students and the happenings at junior high, please tune into KRXT at 9 a.m. Thursdays or you can visit the Rockdale ISD website ( and listen to the files that are also uploaded to the site.

Thank you for listening to our students on the radio.
