Professional genealogist Lynna Kay Shuffield of Houston held a free workshop Saturday at the city library. Subjects covered included scrapbooking and “making the most of a grave website.” Shuffield said the three-hour class was held to compensate for missing iinstruction from an August session in Rockdale which was cut short because of a medical emergency. RISD released from all monitoring statuses
Because of its good test scores, posted in August, 2013, the Rockdale ISD has been released from all state monitoring requirements that resulted from test scores three years ago.
Pam Kaufmann, assistant superintendent for instruction and administration, told RISD school trustees Monday the district has also been released from federal Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) monitoring. Full Story

‘Perfectly legal,’ Tannerite cause of calls
A social media-fueled flurry of calls Saturday evening led to more than 50 calls for police asking about “explosions” heard around Rockdale.
While there were more exotic explanations available throughout Rockdale, the sound turned out to have been the same thing that propelled a previous flurry of concern last fall, legal exploding targets. Full Story

89 calls during week for sheriff’s department
There were 89 mostly routine calls during the past week reported to the Milam County Sheriff’s Department.
Those included four possible scams, missing horses, two juvenile cases and a vandalism incident.

Police warn on cell phone use at school parking lots, streets
Rockdale Police are warning motorists, especially parents dropping off or picking up students, that it’s illegal to use “hands on” cell phones while in motion.
“ That law has been in effect now for quite a while,” Lt. J. D. Newlin said. “But there still seem to be a number of persons who aren’t aware just what it’s all about.” Full Story
