State CX qualifiers

State qualifiers. T hat phrase now can be used to describe sophomores Cole Sheppard and Christian Grimes. Coached by Amy Laurrell, they compete in Cross X Debate and recently competed in their district competition and qualified for the State Debate contest, which is scheduled for March.

These two students take debating seriously and attended a summer debate camp, as well as attended several debate tournaments during the fall. The dedication and hard work have paid off for them and we are looking forward to seeing what they accomplish over the next couple of years. Congratulations Cole and Christian.

Our junior high One Act Play recently competed in their district contest and won first place. Sherry LaGrone does a great job with our junior high theater program and has them ready for Susan Myer and our high school program when they reach high school. They presented the play “The Diviners” and it was a great show.

A number of students received individual accolades, including: Kaleb Dodd, best actor; Kyle King, all-star cast; Amanda Storey, all-star cast; Emilie Compton, all-star cast; Keaton Popham, honorable mention all-star cast; Trebeaux Broussard, honorable mention all-star cast; Brock Gage, best crew; Caleb Stevenson, best crew; Trevor Grimes, best crew; Kenna Bounds, best crew; Manuel Garcia, best crew.

Special recognition goes out to Brock Gage. Brock was responsible for operating the light board. During our rehearsal at district, the light cues were programmed onto a disk. Before the show started, it was discovered the disk had been erased. Brock operated the light board manually, strictly from memory. Our junior high play is pretty complex as junior high plays go and Brock was able to orchestrate over 40 lighting changes from memory. Great job, Brock. This type of performance under adversity and pressure will serve you well in life.

Our varsity basketball teams are in the midst of district play. Our girls are sitting in third place at the moment and appear in good shape for a possible playoff appearance. Our boys are tied for third with Somerville and Iola and are battling for a possible playoff spot. Both squads are very competitive and play hard and the second half of district should be interesting. Come out and enjoy some Eagle and Lady Eagle basketball.

We are in the process of developing new vision and mission statements for the district, as well as strategic goals that will help shape the course of the district over the next five years. A committee of employees, board members and parents working on this project hope to present their recommendations to the board at our regular February meeting. Once they are adopted, I will share them with you.
