Early voting continues

253 cast ballots on first day; Saturday session set

Early voting is in full swing throughout Milam County for March 4 Republican and Democratic Primaries with 253 casting ballots Tuesday, the first day, and through the mail.

There’s a special weekend, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. early ballot day on Saturday at the Milam County Clerk’s office in Cameron.

That’s the only place for Saturday balloting. The county’s other three early voting locations are only open on weekdays. (See adjacent box for hours.)

RACES—There are six contested races on the Republican primary ballot, with the premier race for county judge where incumbent Dave Barkemeyer is challenged by Frank Summers in a rematch of the 2010 general election in which Summers, a threeterm incumbent at the time, ran as a Democrat.

Dale Keen and Jay Beathard are vying for the Precinct 3 constable position. The winner will replace Carol Wells, who has already resigned from the post, citing health reasons. It is anticipated that the top vote getter could be named to finish out Wells’ term through 2014 by the county commissioners court, as there is no Democratic challenger for the position.

Incumbent Andy Isaacs is being challenged by Kim Stewart for the Precinct 3 justice of the peace. There was no Democratic filing for the position.

Mike Marek and Donald Ray Shuffield will face off for the Precinct 2 Commissioners spot. There is no Democratic challenger and incumbent Democrat Kenneth Hollas chose not to run for re-election.

Incumbent Donna Orsag faces Linda Acosta in the county treasurer race. There is no Democratic challenger.

Newcomers Karen Berry and Margot Contreras are both vying for the district clerk spot. There was no Democratic filing for the position and incumbent Cindy Fechner chose not to run again.

There are no contested local Democratic races.

INCUMBENTS— Republican incumbents who have drawn no chal- lengers, in either the primary or general election are Precinct 1 Commissioner (unexpired term) Chuck “Tank” Balch and Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Rick Gommert.

Two incumbent Democrats have no primary opposition, nor a Republican challenger in November. They are County Clerk Barbara Vansa and Precinct 4 Commissioner Jeff Muegge.

RACES—Two November races are already set.

For Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace, incumbent Gary Northcott D) will face (R) Wanda Hobbs in the November general election.

In Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 incumbent Sam Berry (R) faces Don Schuerman (D).
