Big Blue Band Disney deadline

Members of the Rockdale High School “Big Blue Band from Tiger Land” are planning a trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida on June 8-14 and are currently looking for individuals and businesses to help fund the experience.

“We will be making band trip T-shirts to help promote our trip and at the same time advertise our sponsors on them,” RISD director of bands Adrian Acevedo said.

Sponsorships are due in by Feb. 27 and can be sent in to PO Box 632, Rockdale TX 76567. FMI: 512-430-6105 or aacevedo@rockdaleisd.net.

HLSR Go Texan scholarships due

HLSR Go Texan scholarship applications are now being expected, according to Milam County Area Go Texas spokesperson Jennifer Hanke.

Applications are available at area high schools, online at www.hlsr.com/Scholarships.aspx or by contacting Hanke at jhanke73@gmail.com or 254-541-4699.

Online applications are due by Feb. 24 and mailed applications must be postmarked by Feb. 28.

‘Pause for Praise’ honorees named

The February Rockdale ISD “Pause for Praise” honorees were announced and recognized during the Feb. 16 RISD trustees meeting. They were:

Elementary—Karen Laughlin, Fine Arts Teacher; Caroline Patterson, Speech; Crystal Taylor, Volunteer.

Intermediate—Jessica Green, Third Grade Teacher; Kinus Phillips, Paraprofessional; Lisa Perrin, Volunteer; Linda Riojas, Custodian; Warren Whorton, Custodian.

Junior high— Katy Williams, Special Education; Bennie Deary, Custodian.

High school—Elaine Brevard, English; John Brown, Paraprofessional.

District—Gerry Mitchan, Maintenance/ Transportation Director.

Rockdale PTO meeting set Tuesday

Rockdale’s PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) will hold its next meeting for Tuesday, March 4, according to president Cheryl Blackstock.

The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. at the Rockdale Junior High commons area. Child care will be provided.

Area students earn degrees at Texas St.

SAN MARCOS—Several area students were among graduates receiving degrees during Fall 2013 commencement ceremonies held in Decemeber at Texas State University.

The graduates included:

• Alethea Maldonado, of Rockdale, Bachelor of Arts degree in English.

• Travis Stockton, of Rockdale, Bachelor of Arts degree in English.

• Jillian Atkins, of Thorndale, Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies, graduated Cum Laude.

Locals named to Texas St. Dean’s List

SAN MARCOS—Several area students have been named to the Dean’s List at Texas State University for the Fall 2013 semester.

They included Andrew Harrison Bland, Britta R. Byrd, Charles Colton Caffey and Nadine E. Oliver, all of Rockdale, and Olivia J. Atkins, of Thorndale.

To be named to the Dean’s List at Texas State, a student must earn a minimum gradepoint average of 3.50 while carrying a class load of at least 12 semester hours.

People-to-People fundraiser March 21

A fundraiser dance for Tanner Willems’ People-to- People trip is set for Friday, March 21. Willems is set to attend the group’s European Discovery trip this summer.

The fundraiser will take place at 7 p. m. March 21 at The Ranch in Rockdale. Brooke Graham is set to perform. A silent auction and 50/50 drawing are also planned.

RHS incoming freshmen meeting

Rockdale High School will conduct an informational parent meeting at 6;30p.m. Tuesday, March 4 for all incoming 2014- 2015 freshman at the Rockdale High School cafeteria, principal Joey Geletka announced.

At the meeting students from the RHS PALS organization will review the new State graduation requirements, athletics, clubs, as well as a tour of the high school campus.

Parents will also receive a copy of the 2014-2015 RHS Course Selection Guide and associated planning documents to help prepare students for registration. RHS staff will be available to answer questions and guide conversations regarding school programming.

REGISTRATION— Registration for incoming freshman will be held 5:30-7:30 p.m. March 18 at RHS for students with last names beginning A-L and March 20 for students with last names beginning with M-Z.

During registration each student and parent will meet with a counselor or administrator to complete a personal graduation plan and choose a plan of study. They will then go to the high school library to register for their classes.
