Mardi Gras scholarship bash to include unique items

Holcombe Holcombe CAMERON—This Saturday’s second annual Christine Holcombe Memorial scholarship Mardi Gras Bash will feature some special auct ion items including a trophy hunt at Whis- key Hollow Exotic Game Ranch, located south of Gause which includes a shoulder mount and accommodations at the lodge, according to spokesperson Deborah Kostroun.

Harvey Dean, of Rockdale, has donated one of his hand forged Damascus steel pocket knives. There’s typically a two year wait for one of his one-of-a-kind knives which typically sells for $1,400 to $1,500. You also won’t want to miss an 1883 Carson City Silver Dollar uncirculated in Nixon packaging or a framed Johnny Manziel poster with Auto Pen autograph.

And if you have a wedding rehearsal, anniversary or graduation party or even a family reunion that needs live entertainment you might want to consider a two-hour acoustic performance by Cameron native Kenny Harrell. That’s just a taste of some of the auction items up for grabs this year but there’s plenty more, Kostroun said.

The “Mardi Gras” bash will be held Saturday, March 1 at Simon George Hall, 401 S. Karnes, in Cameron. The event, which will start at 6 p.m., will include a Cajun food dinner, door prizes, auctions and games for the kids.

Adult tickets are $10 and children under 18 are $5. Tickets may be purchased at the Cameron Chamber of Commerce, Milam County Extension Office, Ideal Poultry, The Rockdale Reporter and Rodenbeck Farm & Ranch in Thorndale.

The Mardi Gras Bash is held in honor of Chris Holcombe, a Milam County Extension agent for over 30 years and a volunteer in many area civic organizations, who lost her long battle with breast cancer last year.

After the 2013 event held in her honor, seven scholarships totaling $15,000 were awarded to Milam County residents who are currently in college. If you would like to donate items to the event, please email cholcombememorial@gmail.com. More information can also be found on the group’s Facebook page, Christine Holcombe Memorial Scholarship Fund.

If you are unable to attend the event but would like to make a donation, please mail checks to Chris Holcombe Memorial Scholarship Fund 1701 N. Hoover, Cameron, Texas 76520.
