Alcoa Retirees Club to meet March 13

First meeting of 2014 for the Alcoa Retirees Club will be held Thursday, March 13 at the Alcoa Lake Training Center, according to Doug Williams, president.

Doors will open at 5 p.m. with a meal at 6 p.m. Members with surnames A through L will provide desserts.

Officers will be elected. There will be no gifts or door prizes, Williams said.

VFW Auxiliary seeking recipes

The Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 6525 in Rockdale are gathering favorite recipes for a new cookbook to be available in the spring.

“Please include your name with your favorite recipe, so we can give you credit for the submission,” said Rita Johnson, spokesperson.

There are several ways to get your recipes to Johnson:

• Mail your recipe to LAVFW, PO Box 186, Rockdale, TX 76567

Medical scholarship applications ready

Application forms for the Bootsie Peebles Memorial Medical Scholarship, given annually by the Thursday Reading Club, are now available at the Rockdale High School counselor’s office and at The Rockdale Reporter.

The scholarship is available to Milam County graduating seniors or to students already enrolled in the medical field at a college or vocational school.

Applicants must have a permanent Milam County address (can be the address of a parent or guardian). Application deadline is April 15 at the RHS counselor’s office or at The Rockdale Reporter.

Donations sought for church windows

Salty Cemetery Association held its 38th annual meeting Monday at the Salty Church Annex. Members voted to create a building fund to replace the windows in the sanctuary. Donations are being sought. An estimated $300 is needed for each of the 12 windows.

Memorial donations may be made (any amount) to Salty Church/Cemetery Fund in care of Rebecca McWilliams, 230 CR 447, Thorndale TX 76577. Designate donation to “Window Fund.” FMI: McWilliams, 512- 446-6114.

Directors re- elected at the meeting were Leroy Stephens, Melba Caffey Luker and Douglas Caffey. The association also voted to seek bids on mowing the cemetery, electrical work and upgrading the propane heating.

They voted to keep the grave opening fee at $200 and to purchase a new heater for the annex.

Directors elected the following officers: Leroy Stephens, president; Keith Fisher, vice president; Dana Caffey, secretary; Rebecca McWilliams, treasurer. Other directors are Douglas Caffey, Reagan Jackson, Melba Caffey Luker, Durwood Tucker and Irby McWilliams.

Crown Garden Club field trip set March 20

Monarch butterfly Lions’ topic Thursday

MILANO—Texas A&M University Monarch butterfly expert Dr. Craig Wilson will speak on the colorful butterfly at the Thursday, March 6 meeting of the Milano Lions Club in the Civic Center.

Dr. Wilson has written about the reasons for declining Monarch numbers—and the importance of providing milkweed plants for the Monarchs during their annual round-trip migrations between Canada and Mexico.

Dr. Wilson is also director of Texas A&M’s Future Scientists Program and a world traveler. “His talks are motivating and stimulating and everyone is invited,” said Curtis Chubb, club president. FMI: 512/455-9180.

Milano seniors plan Florida Boys show

MILANO—Milano Senior Citizens will hold a gospel singing variety show by the new Florida Boys at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 14 in the Civic Center.

Grief support group meets twice monthly

CAMERON—Standards Hospice sponsors grief support group meetings from 5 to 6 p.m. each second and fourth Wednesdays.
