Pink facade will be razed, ending 19-month ‘saga’
The Cameo Building finally ran out of lives.
Gloria Thrasher, owner of the downtown landmark at 113 East Cameron (US 79), took out a demolition permit at City Hall last week, ending a 19-month saga with more stops and starts than 5 p.m. Austin traffic.
“Demolition will begin as soon as the weather allows us to proceed,” Thrasher said. Full Story

Rockdale Operations atomizer now closed
Survived Alcoa smelter shutdown by five years
They aren’t making any kind of metal at Alcoa’s Rockdale Operations any more.
The atomizer—once touted as the world largest atomizer for making powdered aluminum—has been closed, in accordance with the timetable announced in December by the aluminum company. Full Story
POSGCD grants ‘on hold’
Fee deferment for Blue Water okayed
Annual grants bestowed by the Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District (POSGCD) are on hold for at least six months after the district granted its largest fee-payer a deferment on a majority of its permit payments. Full Story

Chamber banquet ahead March 27th
The 62nd annual Rockdale Chamber of Commerce Banquet is set for 6 p.m. Thursday, March 27, in the junior-high commons.
For the second straight year, speaker will be Jim Reed, executive director of the Central Texas Council of Governments.
Entertainment will be provided by the Rockdale High School Jazz Band, under the direction of Adrian Acevedo. Full Story
Where there’s smoke....
There’s fire. At 12:44 p.m. Saturday the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department was called to its second major rural house fire in three weeks. The James Hilton residence, 1857 County Road 446 in the Salty area, sustained heavy damage. Assistant Full Story
Benefits set for officer, ‘school cop’
