‘Ride 2 Recovery’ at Apache Pass Monday
Hot dogs, drinks for public to cheer wounded veterans
Nearly 200 combat-wounded American veterans will make a stop at Apache Pass during the noon hour Monday and the public is invited to attend.
Ride 2 Recovery assists the veterans to rehabilitate “both physically and mentally” from injuries sustained in war, according to Christopher Swan, spokesman. Full Story
More charges in large series of burglaries
Two Rockdale residents were arrested last week in connection with break-ins of storage buildings on Bushdale Road but that could be just the tip of the iceberg, police said.
A third person has now been arrested, a fourth is being sought and more charges have been filed. Full Story
Two arrests in post office thefts
A Temple couple was arrested late Thursday at their home and charged in connection with a massive series of thefts at Central Texas Post Offices.

Saturday’s house fire on CR 446 in the Salty area, between Rockdale and Thorndale, brought out four units from the Rockdale VFD and one from the Thorndale department. Heavy damage was reported to the James Hilton home. James McQuinn, assistant RVFD chief, said cause of the blaze remains undetermined. He said the fire began toward the back of the residence and burned much of its center. Full Story

Thorndale Chamber moves awards open house to Thursday
The Thorndale Area Chamber of Commerce Awards Open House will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 20 at the TACC building where we will honor our outstanding citizens for 2013. The votes have been counted and the winners for Citizen of the Year, Business Person of the Year, and Agricultural Person of the Year for 2013 will be announced. Full Story
Rockdale High School is one of four area campuses to recieve a $500 donation from the Duchess convenience stores thorugh their Exxon Education Alliance. City rebates continue to rise
County check down in 2013 comparison
AUSTIN—Texas Comptroller Susan Combs said that state sales tax revenue in February was up $2.2 billion, up 5.8 percent compared to February 2013.
Combs sent out $553 million in March local sales tax allocations last week to cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts.
That is up 4.1 percent compared to the same time last year. Full Story
Milam’s jobless rate falls again
Texas, U.S. numbers also fall for third consecutive month
AUSTIN— Unemployment rates fluctuated for Milam and neighboring counties in January, according to numbers recently released by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC).
Milam Count y’s Januar y non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 6.2 percent, compared with 6.3 in December.
This was the third straight month for the county’s jobless numbers to fall. Full Story
