Funeral services for Roy Joe Houston Sr., 78, of Houston were held Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at the Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale with Rev. Jack Chelf of the First Baptist Church officiating. Burial followed in the Oak Lawn Cemetery with military honors.

Mr. Houston died Thursday, April 10, 2014 in a Houston hospital.

He was born Oct. 7, 1935 in Iredell, Texas to Truman James and Mary Eula (Sursa) Houston. He was raised in Houston and after serving his country in the U.S. Air Force he attended the Lone Star College and received an associates degree in applied science.

Mr. Houston worked as a supervisor of electronics for the United States Postal Service and later for a time at H&R Block.

He married Pansy Doss on July 6, 1962 in Houston.

He was a Baptist, member of the Woodlands Masonic Lodge #1157, Arabia Shrine Temple, VFW in Hearne, Salt Grass Trail Riders (Life Member) and Texas Range Riders.

His hobbies included reading, watching baseball and football, watching Gaither Homecoming DVDs, listening to classical music and eating at Whataburger.

Mr. Houston was preceded in death by his son, Doug Harris; his parents; also siblings, Virginia, Jack Jr., Floyd and Bill.

Survivors are his wife Pansy Houston of Houston; son Roy Joe “Sam” Houston and wife Pam of Houston; daughter Carol Dornak and husband Ron of Franklin; grandchildren Alyssa Houston, Hannah Houston, Troy Dornak and wife Melissa, Crystal Dornak and Travis Dornak; great-grandchildren Shelby and Brandon Martin and sister Maxine Birkelbach and husband Stanley of Fredericksburg.

Pallbearers were Doug B. Loder, William Frazier, Ron Dornak, William Houston, III, T.J. Houston, Jr. and John Stewart.

Honorary pallbearers were Donald Houston and Richard H. Skolant.
