King, Blanchard make it to third place match

The Rockdale mixed doubles couple Blake King and Erin Blanchard were tripped up in the third place match Tuesday afternoon in the Class 3A, Region III tennis tournament.

Due to stormy weather, King and Blanchard were forced to play until nearly midnight Monday and then return to the courts early Tuesday morning.

They dropped a 6-1, 6-4 match against Fernando Luque and Jamie Madison of Groesbeck, then lost the third-place match against Tyler Flatt and Caitlyn Hardan of Groesbeck 2-6, 6-0, 6-3.

On Monday, King and Blanchard easily disposed of Shaxavier Johnson and Ramon Cardenas of Houston Scrabrough 6-1, 6-0 in the first round.

In the quarterfinals. they recovered to whip Chris Dunn and Sherridan Cassell of Center, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

King and Blanchard were the District 18-3A runners-up.

Five members of College Station’s second-year tennis program qualified for the state tournament Tuesday.

The Tiger twosome were trying to become the first Rockdale players to make it to state since 2012.
