Matthews

A celebration of life for Ricky Lane “Matt” Matthews, 57, of Rockdale was held Saturday, May 3, 2014, at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale with Pastor Jack Chelf officiating. Cremation followed.

Mr. Matthews died Wednesday, April 30. He had battled cancer with great determination. He wanted to play one last time with two music groups and make a recording of one of the songs he had written. He was able to record that song with the help of Scott Fischer on Monday, April 28, before he passed away.

Mr. Matthews was born Aug. 8, 1956, in Cameron to Manuel and Edna “Teeny” (Hardwick) Matthews.

He started playing guitar at the age of 11. He loved music, played in bands and also taught guitar lessons. His love for music was second only to his family.

Mr. Matthews also enjoyed working in the jobs he had.

He married Linda Tovar on April 17, 2000, in Rockdale.

Mr. Matthews was a member of First Baptist Church and also played in the church band, “Live Out Loud.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, Manuel and Teeny Matthews, and a brother, David K. Matthews.

Survivors are his wife, Mary Linda Matthews of Rockdale; two daughters, Terry Garza and Ben Rodriguez, Emily Garza and Julian Gonzalez, all of Rockdale; four grandchildren, Hannah Nicole Rodriguez, Harper Brielle Rodriguez, Jayla Rose Gonzalez and Jaxon Anthony Gonzalez; and a sister, Donna Abbott and husband J.P. of Belton.

The burn ban for Milam County has been lifted. Burning is always prohibited in the county's municipalities.
