Retiring minister has been leader in Rockdale

Dear editor,

A few weeks ago in The Rockdale Reporter was the announcement of the retirement of Rev. Jack Chelf.

I am writing to mourn the loss of such an outstanding Rockdale community citizen and leader. I also am writing to express my great appreciation to Rev. Chelf for all he has done for our community while he was the minister of First Baptist Church in Rockdale.

I served on the committee with Rev. Chelf to try to improve the Rockdale physical school facilities. He was an outstanding member of that group and worked tirelessly for the betterment of the facilities in our school district.

Not only did Rev. Chelf serve on that committee but he chaired the committee to get a bond election passed to improve the school facilities.

Without his leadership, that bond election may not have passed. Thanks to Rev. Chelf’s leadership and work, we now have a new intermediate school and an almost new high school.

I speak for myself, and I think for many in the Rockdale community, when I bid a sad farewell to the Chelfs.

We wish for you Rev. Chelf and wife, LeAnn, many years of wonderful retirement.
