Retired teachers to meet Thursday

Milam County Retired Teachers will meet at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 15 at the Milano Community Center across from post office. A covered dish luncheon will be served and new officers will be installed. Information from TSTA District 6 convention will be shared. FMI: Alma Lue Wenzel, 254-605-4009.

Milano Opry to celebrate five years on Saturday

MILANO—The Milano Opry will celebrate its fifth anniversary on Saturday, May 17 at Milano High School. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7.

“Come early and eat a hamburger or barbecue sandwich and a piece of homemade pie,” said Lynn Martin, publicist.

Guest performer will be Chick Herrin and 10-year-old McKenzie Jones. House band members are Rian Castillo, Billy Barnett, Steve Leal, Michael Wall, Gary Beard, Johnny Foster and Martin.

“Come enjoy ‘a big show In a small town’ and help us give scholarships to local graduates,” Martin said.

Genealogy society hears about cemetery project

Milam County Genealogical Society met April 22 with 14 members and one guest present. Jack Brooks presented a program on work he and wife Beth are doing in some of Milam County’s old, abandoned cemeteries.

The society will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 27 at Citizens National Bank-Rockdale. Speaker will be Dr. Donnie Hamilton, professor of anthropology and archaeology at Texas A&M. He will speak on his restoration project at the old “Beard rock house” south of Milano on SH 36. His program will be presented at the start of the meeting.— Linda Whorton, publicity

Walmart to host CMN fundraiser May 24

Rockdale Walmart will host a fund-raiser that will benefit Children’s Miracle Network from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 24, according to Johanna Faith, manager.

The festival will feature a bike raffle, cake walk, bounce houses, face painting, games for the kids, a dunk tank, barbecue and more.

“We are also looking for local business owners, local celebs or just plain folks who want to volunteer for the dunk tank,” Faith said. All proceeds go to Children’s Miracle Network.

Sunshine quilters to meet May 22

Sunshine ‘n Shadows Quilt Guild will meet at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, May 22 at Meadowbrook Baptist Church fellowship hall. Members will work on individual projects, according to Eddie Davidson, spokesperson. Visitors are welcome. FMI: 512- 446-6316.

Thorndale VFD benefit planned for May 24

THORNDALE—A benefit for the Thorndale Volunteer Fire Department, in memory of Maggie Schneider, will be held at Fireman’s Hall on Saturday, May 24.

A dinner, live auction and dance will be included. The evening’s schedule:

• Dinner, 6 p. m., menu smoked Boston butt, noodles, beans, potato salad and other trimmings. To-go plates will be sold in advance for $12 (pick-up starts at 5 p.m. outside of hall).

• Live auction, 8 p.m. with top item picnic table made by Wayne Fisher, plus many other items.

• Raffle tickets are on sale: grand prize Colt 45 lever-action Henry Big Boy rifle. Second and third prizes, $100 gift cards from B. S. Tire Company.

• Dance 9 p.m. with music by country singer Kenny Orts and the No Chance Band.

Holcombe scholarship

Applications are being accepted for the Christine Holcombe Memorial Scholarship, according to Deborah Kostroun. Funds for this scholarship were raised at the Mardi Gras Bash held in March.

Applicants must have completed at least one year of college and must be a former Milam County resident or have graduated from a Milam County high school. Applications are due by June 15.

Grief support meetings
